{"id":9283,"date":"2018-11-26T09:08:50","date_gmt":"2018-11-26T14:08:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=9283"},"modified":"2018-11-26T09:56:32","modified_gmt":"2018-11-26T14:56:32","slug":"come-to-antigua-and-have-a-great-time-antigua-style","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=9283","title":{"rendered":"Come to Antigua and have a great time, Antigua style."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here I am, home again in CT, after a week in Antigua to welcome the Dawgs and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saltydawgsailing.org\/\">The Salty Dawg Rally to the Caribbean<\/a>.\u00a0 They had a tough slog on the way down, some saying that it was the most difficult run in nearly a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Faced with persistent SE winds, about 25 boats had to stop in Bermuda for fuel repairs or both.\u00a0 Others kept heading south, working hard to make their way against relentless headwinds.<\/p>\n<p>With the fleet about equally split between making landfall in the BVIs and Antigua, the expectation was that about 30-40 boats would end up in Antigua.\u00a0 However, with some boats taking nearly 2 weeks to make the run from Hampton, VA, as they passed the BVIs, a number of Antigua bound boats, out of time, stopped there instead of continuing on to Antigua.<\/p>\n<p>I was bummed about that but certainly understand that crew has only a limited time to be away and with Thanksgiving early this year, schedules were tighter than usual.\u00a0 \u00a0And, speaking of Thanksgiving, this year it was on November 22nd, but next year it will be nearly a week later, on the 28th, which will take a lot of pressure off of schedules for both skippers and crew.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, when I arrived in Antigua on November 12th, there wasn&#8217;t a Dawg in sight excepting a few that had happily made their way north from Trinidad to meet up with the fleet.\u00a0 \u00a0Unfortunately, with nobody in &#8220;town&#8221; I had to put off the first event.\u00a0 However, by the time our next event, on the 14th we had a respectable showing so we carried on.<\/p>\n<p>The plan was for the boats to congregate in Nelson&#8217;s Dockyard and a number of Dawgs did just that.\u00a0<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9290\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1618.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1618.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1618-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>It was nice to see our rally flag being proudly flown in such a historic spot. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9291\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1627.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1627.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1627-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Our first event, held at Rhythm of Blue Art Gallery was a great way to kick off a week of celebration for skippers and crew.\u00a0 Nancy Nicholson, who owns this lovely gallery in English Harbor, timed her season opening to include us and it was a great evening, complete with a terrific reggae band, rum drinks and great sushi appetizers.\u00a0I expect that Angie of Club Sushi, at the Yacht Club, had a hand in providing the sushi.\u00a0 \u00a0I&#8217;m no expert but Angie does make great sushi.<\/p>\n<p>Nancy was joined by her mother, Lisa Nicholson at the opening.\u00a0 Lisa and her husband Desmond came to the island in the 50s and were instrumental in establishing the charter and tourism trades on the island.\u00a0 The Nicholson family had a lasting impact on Antigua.\u00a0 I have a book with photos that Nancy&#8217;s father Desmond took in the 50s and will be posting them soon.\u00a0 \u00a0 They are wonderful and show the remarkable transformation that the area has undergone over the decades.<\/p>\n<p>Nancy and her mom.\u00a0 Note Nancy&#8217;s colorful pottery behind them.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9260\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1441.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"1050\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1441.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1441-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1441-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1441-533x800.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>True to form, Nancy brought in a great band.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9261\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1443.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1443.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1443-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>It was a lovely evening. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9295\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1437.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1437.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1437-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>A number of &#8220;early Dawgs&#8221; of rum to it&#8217;s enlisted men.\u00a0 \u00a0What wonderful historic surroundings of Copper and Lumber, in the Dockyard.\u00a0 \u00a0The rum was good too.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9284\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1458-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1458-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/IMG_1458-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>North Sails opened up their shop for a cocktail party, complete with crepes for all.\u00a0 I missed this event but heard it was a lot of fun. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9293\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Salty-Dog-a.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Salty-Dog-a.png 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Salty-Dog-a-300x215.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>And, of course, our arrival cocktail party at the Admiral&#8217;s Inn, a wonderful spot to enjoy history, and an &#8220;adult beverage&#8221;
