{"id":8892,"date":"2018-06-01T09:39:40","date_gmt":"2018-06-01T14:39:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=8892"},"modified":"2018-06-01T09:40:26","modified_gmt":"2018-06-01T14:40:26","slug":"to-be-a-little-vigilant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=8892","title":{"rendered":"To be a Little Vigilant&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For several months last winter, Brenda and I cruised aboard Pandora through the Windward Islands, in the south east Caribbean.\u00a0 Along the way happened upon a lovely steel trawler in Le Marin, Martinique, <em>Little Vigilant<\/em>.\u00a0 I mentioned that sighting in a prior post but my only information was a brief glimpse and a quick photo as she motored by.\u00a0 I was bummed to only get a quick shot of her as she glided by and hoped that our paths would cross again.<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8918\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_8818.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_8818.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_8818-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>As luck would have it, we did see her again, a number of times actually.\u00a0 When we spied her in Bequia, I was able to get aboard for a tour by captain Earl MacKenzie, who was running her for the winter.\u00a0 He knows her particularly well as he had recently been the project manager for the first stage of her refit at <a href=\"http:\/\/frontstreetshipyard.com\/\">Front Street Shipyard<\/a> in Belfast Maine in 2017 and was clearly proud to show her off.<\/p>\n<p><em>Little Vigilant<\/em> has an interesting history.\u00a0 This is what her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Little-Vigilant-125350554173111\/\">Facebook page<\/a>, has to say about her.\u00a0 It&#8217;s pretty interesting.\u00a0 \u00a0It seems that she was originally\u00a0conceived by her first owner, Drayton Cochran of Oyster Bay, NY in the late 1940&#8217;s.\u00a0 \u00a0She is named after a much larger 110&#8242; Vigilant, built in the 1930s, a sailboat I think, that he cruised widely.\u00a0 Unfortunately, I wasn&#8217;t able to find out much about<em> Little Vigilant&#8217;s<\/em> big sister but it seems that Cochran decided to downsize and\u00a0 commissioned Walter McGinnis of Boston, MA to design a trawler for summer use on the European waterways.<\/p>\n<p>She was built and launched by Abeking &amp; Rasmussen in Bremerhaven, Germany in 1950, and used by Mr Cochran extensively during the next ten years.\u00a0 As an interesting footnote, Cochran is described by some as the &#8220;father of the Concordia yawl&#8221; as he was the one that approached A&amp;R about building these lovely little yachts that remain so popular today.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, he had a very close relationship with yard as he launched both Little Vigilant and his own Concordia yawl, both built by A&amp;R in the same year,\u00a0 Shelia, now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.concordiaboats.com\/yawl.php?id=5\"><em>Duende<\/em>, Concordia yawl hull #5<\/a>.\u00a0 \u00a0This photo is of one of her sisterships of this iconic design.\u00a0<span class=\"text_exposed_show\" style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 16px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8911\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/concordia-yawl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"980\" height=\"652\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/concordia-yawl.jpg 980w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/concordia-yawl-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/concordia-yawl-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/concordia-yawl-800x532.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><\/span><em>Little Vigilant<\/em> was sold in the early &#8217;60s to her second owner, a wealthy British businessman and sat in a storage shed, I am tempted to say &#8220;barn find&#8221;, until 2004 when she was discovered by the present owner. She has a lot of work done on her since that time both in 2005 and again last year, the first stage of a multiyear refit.<\/p>\n<p>She presently hails from South Darthmouth, MA, which is doubly interesting as that&#8217;s where all the Concordia yawls were launched between the late 30s and 50s.\u00a0 \u00a0As an aside, the history of the much loved Concordia Yawls has been very well documented by marine historian Waldow Holand, son of the founder of Concordia Boat Company in Padanaram, MA.\u00a0\u00a0There&#8217;s even a wonderful book about the class that&#8217;s worth reading.<span class=\"text_exposed_show\" style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 16px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8912\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/a_life_in_boats_225x280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"280\" \/><\/span>However, I digress.\u00a0 So, back to Little Vigilant, also a product of the same builder that produced the Concordia yawls.\u00a0 This video about her most recent refit, is worth seeing.\u00a0 If this video seems a bit familiar, that&#8217;s because I used it in a post where I referred to<em> Little Vigilant<\/em> back in mid February.\u00a0 I guess I&#8217;ll just say if it&#8217;s worth posting once, it&#8217;s worth posting again as this is one pretty boat. <iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S6cyoFTj74o\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>I found <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.tadroberts.ca\/2018\/01\/geerd-n-hendal-yacht-designer\/\">these plans for <em>Low Tide<\/em><\/a>, penned by Geerd N. JHendal (1903-1998), a yacht designer from Camden, Maine.\u00a0 \u00a0The author of the post about <em>Low Tide<\/em>\u00a0notes the similarity to <em>Little Vigilant<\/em>.\u00a0 The drawings were published in The Rudder Magazine in April, 1948 and the author who wrote about <em>Low Tide<\/em> suggests that this design was an early proposal to Drayton Cochran for <em>Little Vigilant<\/em> (launched in 1950 to a Walter McInnis design).<\/p>\n<p>The link says this about the design:\u00a0 &#8220;Geerd was a well known yacht designer at the time but I have a feeling that his heart was not quite in this one. McInnis used a commercial herring carrier hull that is far prettier with lot\u2019s of shape in the ends. This one is 69\u2032 x 16\u20329\u2033 with 7\u20326\u2033 draft. Construction was to be wood, that single big fuel tank seems unlikely, and all the topside ports raise questions about framing.&#8221;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8914\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/low-tide.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1021\" &#8220;get home engine&#8221; helpful on a single engine cruiser.\u00a0 \u00a0It&#8217;s described as&#8230;&#8221;Power is a single 6-71 with an auxiliary 2-71 turning the main shaft via a big 326w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1354px) 100vw, 1354px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As I mentioned, I was lucky enough to have captain Earl give me a tour of her when we were in Bequia.\u00a0 \u00a0 She looked just wonderful sitting on her mooring on a beautiful &#8220;winter&#8221; day, sweet sheer and all.\u00a0 Just love the proper boarding platform\/stairway.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8907\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9804.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>On the day I visited to introduce myself to Earl and his wife Bonnie, several of the owner&#8217;s family were visiting, all sitting around this table on deck, a very civilized spot to wile away the hours.\u00a0 \u00a0The classic,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Wind_in_the_Willows\">Wind in the Willows<\/a> would be a prefect read while sipping an iced tea at this table, I would think.\u00a0 Bonnie sewed the awning so they&#8217;d be out of the sun and wind.\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8906\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9803.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9803.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9803-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>As there are brief showers and plenty of sun most days in the Caribbean, a cover like this would come in very handy.\u00a0 \u00a0Note the vinyl section forward.\u00a0 It&#8217;s designed to be raised or lowered to keep out the rain or adjust the amount of breeze to adjusts to the perfect &#8220;zepher&#8221; when at anchor.\u00a0 How civilized.\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8905\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9801.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9801.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9801-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>This is a pretty neat anchor lift that I believe Earl designed.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t take the strain at anchor, just holds it up and secure when stowed.\u00a0 \u00a0The fire hose threaded on the chain near the anchor is a nice touch to keep the topsides from being marred.\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8896\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9792.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"1050\" 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>This is a serious windlass, original to the boat but rebuilt. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8897\" 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>The view aft looks like a great spot to spend time with a rod and line or just a nice spot to watch the world recede into the distance.\u00a0 Inside the aft deck cabin, open to the stern, is a cozy spot to lounge while underway too.\u00a0 \u00a0I didn&#8217;t take a picture of the deck cabin space as it was all torn up for the day as Earl was working in the area.\u00a0 \u00a0You&#8217;ll just have to trust me that it is a nice place to watch the world go by.\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8898\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>She has a serious engine room and with very good sound insulation, something that Pandora needs but doesn&#8217;t have.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8901\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9797.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>I don&#8217;t expect that this steering chain will break any time soon.\u00a0 It&#8217;s as rugged as the rest of her gear.\u00a0<em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8902\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9798.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Little<\/em> Vigilant is a charming yacht and with additional refits planned.\u00a0 I expect that she will be even more lovely when our paths cross again, which I hope is soon.<\/p>\n<p><em>Little Vigilant<\/em> is a charming little yacht with an interesting history and an owner who&#8217;s decided that it pays to be more than a little vigilant in keeping her in
