{"id":7937,"date":"2017-11-18T15:08:08","date_gmt":"2017-11-18T20:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=7937"},"modified":"2017-11-18T15:08:08","modified_gmt":"2017-11-18T20:08:08","slug":"sure-make-that-a-tot-for-me-too","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=7937","title":{"rendered":"Sure, make that a tot for me too."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The other night I invited the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.royal-naval-tot-club.com\/\">Royal Naval Tot club of Antigua and Barbuda<\/a> to address the Salty Dawg Rally group and share a bit of history of this very unique club.\u00a0 \u00a0Following that introduction at one of our earlier events, last night we were invited to join them for an introductory &#8220;tot&#8221; of rum.<\/p>\n<p>This group gets together every night of the year to pay tribute to a since abandoned practice of issuing a ration of rum to every sailor in the British Navy.<br \/>\nHere&#8217;s what they have to say about the club on their website&#8230;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><b>&#8220;Aims of the Royal Naval Tot Club of Antigua &amp; Barbuda<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>To signal the nominal end of the working day at 1800 hours local time by a gathering of like-minded individuals who make up the membership.<\/p>\n<p>To carry on the revered tradition, sadly ended in 1970, by consuming a half gill of the nearest equivalent to the rum which was issued to the Royal Navy (i.e. Pusser&#8217;s Blue Label).<\/p>\n<p>To confirm daily allegiance to and\/or respect for the Crown by proposing the Loyal Toast to Her Majesty, the Queen.<\/p>\n<p>To provide Royal Navy warships with marine based leisure activities and organise entertainment for the crew in the Nelson&#8217;s Dockyard area.<\/p>\n<p>To promote and foster friendship and goodwill in the English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour areas through entertainment and social services.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I had first learned of the group last April when I attended one of their ceremonies and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=7093\">wrote about it in this post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I was so intrigued by what I experienced, I thought it would be fun to share it with the rally fleet Dawgs.<\/p>\n<p>So, last evening we assembled at 18:00 in Nelson&#8217;s Dockyard,\u00a0 a perfect place to reflect on the history of Antigua, the British Navy and the Queen.<\/p>\n<p>I introduced the Dawgs to the Tot Club.\u00a0 \u00a0That&#8217;s me in the white shirt and tan shorts.\u00a0<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7939\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/11-18-17a-010.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/11-18-17a-010.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/11-18-17a-010-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>After the introductions were done, Tot Club leadership officiated and instructed us to &#8220;cleanse our palates&#8221; with a bit of water.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7938\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/11-18-17a-006.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/11-18-17a-006.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/11-18-17a-006-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>We raised our glasses, toasts were made and a final tribute to the Queen.\u00a0 Then, everyone, well, nearly everyone, downed the &#8220;measure&#8221; of rum in a single gulp followed by a swallow of water to kill the burn.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7940\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/11-18-17a-042.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"1050\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/11-18-17a-042.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/11-18-17a-042-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/11-18-17a-042-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/11-18-17a-042-533x800.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>It was a very unique event and I think that the Dawgs really enjoyed themselves.\u00a0 And, I can&#8217;t think of a spot where this custom would be more appropriate than in such a historic spot, in the midst of Nelson&#8217;s dockyard, the home of the British Navy here in the Caribbean in the age of sail.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d very much like to join the club myself and hope to do so in the coming months.\u00a0 I won&#8217;t go into what&#8217;s involved in this except to say that it involves\u00a0 drinking a lot of &#8220;tots&#8221;
