{"id":79,"date":"2010-08-24T11:54:00","date_gmt":"2010-08-24T11:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=79"},"modified":"2010-08-24T11:54:00","modified_gmt":"2010-08-24T11:54:00","slug":"camden-maine-and-east-to-mt-desert-island-living-the-dream","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=79","title":{"rendered":">Camden Maine and East To Mt Desert Island &quot;living the dream&quot;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>><\/p>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">For the last two weeks we have moved from Camden to Pulpit Harbor, Perry Creek and on to North East Harbor on Mt. Desert.&nbsp; While we are in Maine, I am working via phone and Web and have had to pick places to spend much of each week that has decent Internet coverage. With my booster this works out well with the exception of the fact that when you head east there is a less modern cell system in place so while cell phones work well, the web isn&#8217;t as reliable.&nbsp; That&#8217;s a problem for me as I am a heavy Web user for work and it can slow things down to a crawl sometimes due to system limitations.&nbsp;<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">One of the problems is that we are unable to spend time in the areas that we like the most as they are too remote to have good cell coverage.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>However, I can\u2019t feel too sorry for myself as I am, never the less, spending more time in Maine, something that I have always wanted to do.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The two week vacation trip isn\u2019t as appealing as it used to be.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>For now I will enjoy staying put for much of the week and working aboard Pandora as though I was in the office.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">  <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Cell  coverage in the western areas of Penobscot Bay are better than the  eastern areas and one area, in particular,&nbsp; where the coverage is good  is Camden, one of our favorite places to visit.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><span> <\/span>One  problem with the harbor though is that it isn\u2019t particularly well protected and features what some call the  &#8220;Camden Roll&#8221;, something that we experienced when we took a mooring on  our most recent visit.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>However if you are able to get a harbor float in the inner harbor, it is wonderful.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>A float can be had for $40 from the Camden Yacht Club but they only allow boats up to 42\u2019 on their floats.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Alternatively, Wayfarer Marine is happy to rent you a float as well, but for $55 a night.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>However, they allow boats up the high 40s but I can\u2019t recall exactly how big.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">  <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">This is the view from the inner harbor on the Yacht Club doc.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>Not bad at all.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_g1Em5-dORLY\/THOnB3sEM3I\/AAAAAAAAA8w\/bfBjtLp0GSI\/s1600\/Maine+8.21.10+003.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_g1Em5-dORLY\/THOnB3sEM3I\/AAAAAAAAA8w\/bfBjtLp0GSI\/s400\/Maine+8.21.10+003.JPG\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">  <\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">This is Pandora on one of the floats.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>As you can see, the space is tight and <span><\/span>it\u2019s more like double parking than mooring.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>A bit stressful to be sure.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>However, the yacht club launch driver can be there to help you dock.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It\u2019s such a great spot, it\u2019s worth the effort.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_g1Em5-dORLY\/THOnHIk06MI\/AAAAAAAAA84\/kna9R5Z6IPU\/s1600\/Maine+8.21.10+007.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_g1Em5-dORLY\/THOnHIk06MI\/AAAAAAAAA84\/kna9R5Z6IPU\/s400\/Maine+8.21.10+007.JPG\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">  <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;There are plenty of opportunities to get out on the water in Camden and this is just one example of the small schooners that you can go out on for a few hours to enjoy the scenery.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_g1Em5-dORLY\/THOnMcrdlAI\/AAAAAAAAA9A\/2BrwpRmjtDs\/s1600\/Maine+8.21.10+027.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_g1Em5-dORLY\/THOnMcrdlAI\/AAAAAAAAA9A\/2BrwpRmjtDs\/s400\/Maine+8.21.10+027.JPG\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The prior evening, however, the day boats were out for their evening cruise, with a full complement of passengers, and a really impressive thunderstorm hit, dumping massive rain on the hapless tourists. To see them huddled on deck covered by thin plastic ponchos was a pitiful sight.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>However, seeing the crew bring these schooners to the dock with gusts over 40kts was impressive, however their soaked charges probably didn&#8217;t appreciate what it is to bring a boat along side a pier in blinding rain and heavy winds.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">  <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">There is plenty of opportunity to see classic craft of all kinds in Maine.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>This one can certainly be called \u201cclassic\u201d but perhaps a better description would be \u201cmini pirate\u201d.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>A couple and their toddler were aboard.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The boat couldn\u2019t be 30\u2019 long which isn&#8217;t exactly the scale that Black Beard would have been looking for.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It was really quite amusing to see the mother making the rounds from stem to stern, time and again, back and forth like a restless and equally miniature captain.<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; <\/span>A very powerful boat.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Notice the crew member forward, probably looking for lobster pots.<span>&nbsp; That gives a good sense of how big a boat she is.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; <\/span>If you take a mooring in most any of the major ports on the island you can get all around the island for free on their shuttle service.&nbsp; Our choice, North East Harbor, was a short shuttle bus away to Jordan Pond, one of the most scenic spots, in our opinion, to dine in all of Maine.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Dining alfresco at the Jordan Pond restaurant is not to be beat with a view of bubble rock.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The popovers are awesome.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; <\/span>This is a view, from up on the hill and thure gardens.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Pandora is off to the left , out of frame.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The town dock and shuttle bus stop are near the \u201cyacht basin\u201d.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>There is a really impressive selection of massively expensive boats\/yachts there.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Some say that North East Harbor is the \u201cPalm Beach of the North\u201d.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>I believe it.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_g1Em5-dORLY\/THOnp_F3JII\/AAAAAAAAA9w\/o6Gpt9nt7Y0\/s1600\/Maine+8.21.10+072.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; and a really big one outside of the harbor that was too big to fit at the dock.&nbsp; Recession?&nbsp; What recession.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span>If you visit North East Harbor, and you should, don&#8217;t miss visiting the two gardens in town, Asticou, a formal Oriental garden and Thuya, a semi formal English garden, both featured at this <a href=\"http:\/\/gardenpreserve.org\/\">link<\/a>.&nbsp; Up on the hill, where the harbor shot above was taken, is Thuya Gardens.&nbsp; These wonderfully maintained gardens compliment each other and visiting them can make for a very nice afternoon ashore.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; transient boaters as it\u2019s quite far off the beaten path and the town landing dries out<span> completely&nbsp; <\/span>about three hours eather side of high tide.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>During our visit we were lucky to have a high tide at around 8pm in the evening and again mid morning the next day.<span>&nbsp; With water at the dock, <\/span>we treated ourselves to a nice dinner out and coffee ashore the next morning.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>I have to say that we were a bit anxious about being left \u201chigh and dry\u201d if we dawdled too much over our wine.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Wading out in the muck and dragging our dink behind wound not have been so much fun after a lovely dinner.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">  <\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_g1Em5-dORLY\/THOnzWIhZUI\/AAAAAAAAA-A\/bwl1IiTo8T8\/s1600\/Maine+8.21.10+102.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_g1Em5-dORLY\/THOnzWIhZUI\/AAAAAAAAA-A\/bwl1IiTo8T8\/s400\/Maine+8.21.10+102.JPG\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Blue Hill is a very quaint town and some of the local architecture is impressive.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>This is the town hall, lovingly maintained. <span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>There is a great grocery in town and, compared to other local stores along the coast, very reasonably priced.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">  <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Another reason to visit Blue Hill is to see the reversing falls.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>As the tidal range is so great in this part of Maine, better than 10\u2019, some areas have really impressive falls when the tide goes out.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>This bridge has white water coursing under it at a dizzying pace with the falling tide.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>This shot doesn\u2019t begin to do it justice.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>To fall in this water would not be good as it surges out past massive boulders into Blue Hill Bay.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; <\/span>Notice, once again, the constant reminder that Maine is the playground of the rich.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span>I often wonder what the homes of folks that own yachts like these must be like.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>A look around the shoreline suggest that several homes would clearly suffice.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>This motoryacht was quite nice.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">  <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The water in Maine is very clean as evidenced by the life in the tidal pool near the falls.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><span><\/span>Of course, what blog post would be complete without a shot of a schooner at anchor with a beautiful sunset.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>This particular schooner is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schoonerheritage.com\/\">Heritage<\/a>, one of the many that take out paying guests for week long cruises along the coastline of Penobscot Bay.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Earlier this evening all aboard went to a local granite island in Merchant Row near Stoninington for a lobster bake and a bit of dining under the setting sun.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_g1Em5-dORLY\/THOoGEOkXTI\/AAAAAAAAA-g\/rRtiAQSK0jw\/s1600\/Maine+8.21.10+154.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;
