{"id":7305,"date":"2017-06-09T10:40:53","date_gmt":"2017-06-09T15:40:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=7305"},"modified":"2017-06-09T10:40:53","modified_gmt":"2017-06-09T15:40:53","slug":"can-a-ship-be-cute-and-rugged","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=7305","title":{"rendered":"Can a ship be cute and rugged?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Friday morning and the sun is out. \u00a0Brenda and I plan lunch at a nearby vineyard as a sort of post anniversary (ours) and birthday (mine) outing in our little red car. \u00a0 The vineyard is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.priamvineyards.com\/\">Priam<\/a> and they have picnic tables outside where you can bring your own lunch and enjoy a bottle of their wine. \u00a0It&#8217;s a very pretty place. \u00a0I mention this as it&#8217;s during the warm months that Pandora is put to bed and we focus on land themed activities. \u00a0And speaking of land, well sort of. \u00a0This little tree frog is visiting us as in past summers. \u00a0We have named him Vilado. \u00a0Not sure why, that&#8217;s just because he looks like a Vilado. \u00a0 Right? \u00a0Whatever&#8230;<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7308\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/6-9-17a-043.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/6-9-17a-043.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/6-9-17a-043-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Pandora&#8217;s still in Hampton and I&#8217;ll be bringing her north at he end of the month and then she will be hauled for 6-8 weeks. \u00a0 I plan on splashing her again in time to go to Newport for classic J yacht racing in late August. \u00a0I understand that there will be 7 racing, the largest number ever to share a course. \u00a0Amazingly, these boats continue to be built and from original plans. \u00a0The most recent one, Svea, \u00a0launched in the Netherlands, built from plans that were drawn up back in the 30s but never built.<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s massive.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7331\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/svea-hull.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/svea-hull.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/svea-hull-300x177.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>No mistaking that this is a game that can only be played by the &#8220;big boys&#8221; who can afford &#8220;big toys&#8221;. \u00a0 A picture of power in every way.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7330\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/svea-sailing.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"476\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/svea-sailing.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/svea-sailing-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/svea-sailing-768x457.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/>It will be fun to see her and the others in Newport later this summer. \u00a0Until then I am focused on more humble but perhaps no less important vessels closer to home.<\/p>\n<p>I had written about a recent arrival at the CT River Museum, the lovely Onrust. She&#8217;s a reproduction of Adrien Block&#8217;s 17th century ship, the first European ship to be built in the new world. \u00a0 His charts were remarkably accurate for someone who didn&#8217;t have any way to view things except from the deck of his little ship. \u00a0 This chart by Block covers the area from the Delaware north through New England. \u00a0 Not bad for a guy from the 1600s.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7332\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/block-chart.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/block-chart.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/block-chart-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Block himself looking like he&#8217;s ready for anything. \u00a0Love the PFD. \u00a0Ok, perhaps It&#8217;s a collar. \u00a0Doesn&#8217;t it look like a PFD?
