Welcome to Paradise."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, we finally made it to one of the &#8220;islands that touch the clouds&#8221;, Dominica, pronounced &#8220;Domineeca&#8221;. \u00a0Most of the admittedly limited number of islands that we have visited on this trip have not been very tall and, as a result, are fairly dry with plenty of cactus and other drought tolerant plants. \u00a0 \u00a0However, there are other islands, especially as you get further south, that are 4,000 to 5,000 feet tall so that the winds, as they blow over the mountains, form clouds that drop their moisture on the island.<\/p>\n<p>Dominica is such an island and it&#8217;s beautiful. \u00a0It was a short 4 hour sail on a terrific beam reach for us to make our way here from Les Saintes a few days ago.\u00a0<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6946\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17a-044.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"1050\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17a-044.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17a-044-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17a-044-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17a-044-533x800.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>This is one of the most undeveloped island in the Eastern Caribbean so there aren&#8217;t many services. \u00a0I guess that crime has been a problem in the past so a number of locals got together and formed an informal security group, PAYS, to patrol the harbor, provide moorings and give tours of the island. \u00a0They are a group of independant operators, entrepreneurs, who are able and willing to help with whatever you might need. \u00a0 As we approached the anchorage on the lee side of the island, Alexis roared up in his skiff to welcome us. \u00a0It seems that who ever connects with a yacht first as they enter the anchorage &#8220;owns&#8221; them for the duration. \u00a0Alexis was the first to reach us as we rounded the point and gave us his business card. \u00a0 &#8220;Welcome to Dominca, Welcome to paradise. \u00a0 Let me know what you need. \u00a0I&#8217;ll get it for you.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6947\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17a-050.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17a-050.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17a-050-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Alexis is a very charming guy and is happy to do whatever. \u00a0His specialty is tours of the island as he has a taxi as well as a nicely appointed skiff. \u00a0 There were other cruisers in the harbor that we knew so once we anchored we began to make plans, of course, with the help of Alexis.<\/p>\n<p>The anchorage is a busy, if bumpy, place with fisherman coming and going all the time. \u00a0This guy was very popular with the frigate birds.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6993\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/4-1-17a-108.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/4-1-17a-108.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/4-1-17a-108-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Before we could go ashore I had to clear in at customs. \u00a0It was a 2 mile dink run down the beach on a really nasty commercial shipping dock. \u00a0Unlike some of the other islands we have visited, there are no natural harbors in Dominica, just the &#8220;leeward&#8221; side of the island. \u00a0When storms hit there is no protection at all.<\/p>\n<p>This was the &#8220;customs office&#8221;. \u00a0Pretty basic.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6948\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17a-060.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17a-060.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17a-060-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>The island is very mountainous with mountains that truly &#8220;touch the cl0uds&#8221; And, speaking of &#8220;touching the clouds&#8221; the view of the mountains from Pandora is spectacular. \u00a0 And, you can clearly see the cloud forest at the top of the mountain.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6949\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17a-063.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17a-063.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17a-063-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>The next morning I decided to go for a hike with some of our cruising friends. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brassavola_nodosa\">Brassovola Nodosa.<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0 They are very common and flower high up in the canopy. \u00a0 They bloom more than once a year unlike most of the others that only bloom in the spring at the beginning of the rainy season in late spring. \u00a0They are very fragrant at night. \u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6962\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17b-010a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2217\" height=\"2185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17b-010a.jpg 2217w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17b-010a-300x296.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17b-010a-768x757.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17b-010a-1024x1009.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17b-010a-800x788.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2217px) 100vw, 2217px\" \/>I saw plenty of other orchids but they weren&#8217;t in flower. \u00a0 These are likely a member of the Cattleya or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laelia\">Laelia<\/a>\u00a0families. \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6968\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17b-042.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17b-042.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17b-042-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>All these plants look about the same when they are not blooming but their flowers are spectacular. \u00a0I wish they were in flower while I was there. \u00a0 Here&#8217;s a sample of some Dominica stamps, including Brassavola Nodosa in the lower right.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6994\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/dominica-stamps.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"194\" \/>Orchids grow in the very top of trees, attached to branches so they can get lots of light. \u00a0However, fungus grow down low and don&#8217;t need so much light. \u00a0 These tiny mushrooms were on a log. \u00a0Each one is only the size of a pea.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6969\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17b-047.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"1050\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17b-047.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17b-047-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17b-047-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-31-17b-047-533x800.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Everywhere I turned there were beautiful leaves and flowers. \u00a0These were about 3&#8242; tall, perhaps taller. \u00a0When in active growth, this member of the grass family can grow several feet per day. \u00a0 The &#8220;stalks&#8221;, actually individual &#8220;blades&#8221; of grass, were about 5-6&#8243; wide. \u00a0 Bamboo is known to be quite invasive and I can only imagine trying to control something like this in a home garden. \u00a0 &#8220;Bob, the bamboo broke through the cement patio again last night. Would you get out the chainsaw and cut down that new growth.&#8221; \u00a0I know of such things from personal experience as we had bamboo in our garden for years but ours was only 1&#8243; wide and perhaps 15&#8243; tall. \u00a0Still a handful to control.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6956\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>In some areas local farmers had cleared the woods to grow bananas or other crops. \u00a0After a few years, they let the forest reclaim the land. \u00a0It opens up the canopy and lets new plants take hold in a sort of sustainable agriculture approach.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6959\"
