{"id":6183,"date":"2016-09-19T14:48:13","date_gmt":"2016-09-19T14:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=6183"},"modified":"2016-09-19T23:31:03","modified_gmt":"2016-09-19T23:31:03","slug":"how-many-degrees-separate-you-from-well-anyone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=6183","title":{"rendered":"How many degrees separate you from, well, anyone?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I made a run south from Greenport to Ft Lauderdale last week, I spent some time getting to know the crew, Captain Mark, First Mate Pete, Engineer Anthony, Chef Mark and Stewardess Heather. \u00a0A great crew and a real change of pace for me after years heading here and there on small boats. \u00a0Well, my boat <em>Pandora<\/em> is not that small but at 47&#8242; she&#8217;s a shrimp, canoe, dink, whatever compared to a the 130&#8242; motor yacht that they crew on.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, along the way Pete, the first mate, and I got to talking and it turns out that, along with his working aboard mega-yachts, he&#8217;s also an accomplished yacht illustrator. \u00a0I had actually seen his work in the past in Showboats International, which I subscribe to. \u00a0It&#8217;s a VERY glossy, and apparently successful magazine of super yachts, if thickness is a measure of success.<\/p>\n<p>One of the features of the publication is a page each month that includes illustrations of notable yacht launches along with some details of the build such as where she was built and the number of crew. \u00a0 \u00a0This is a layout from a recent issue that was done by Pete. \u00a0 <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6186\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Boat-International-April-2016-In-this-issue-01.jpg\" alt=\"boat-international-april-2016-in-this-issue-01\" width=\"2717\" height=\"3425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Boat-International-April-2016-In-this-issue-01.jpg 2717w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Boat-International-April-2016-In-this-issue-01-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Boat-International-April-2016-In-this-issue-01-768x968.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Boat-International-April-2016-In-this-issue-01-812x1024.jpg 812w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Boat-International-April-2016-In-this-issue-01-635x800.jpg 635w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2717px) 100vw, 2717px\" \/><br \/>\nTo be a reader of this publication and to then run into that same illustrator proves once again that it is indeed a very small world. \u00a0You know, the whole &#8220;six degrees of separation&#8221; thing? \u00a0Interestingly, Facebook has determined that there really isn&#8217;t six degrees of separation, it&#8217;s more like 4.74, not to put too fine a point on it. \u00a0 Check out this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DegreesApp\/\">link to Facebook<\/a>\u00a0to learn more. \u00a0\u00a0Twitter did a similar analysis and they think that the number is 4.67. White, the poet. \u00a0In a video I included in my post, Steve talked about the challenges of making the deck lights leak proof. \u00a0Ok, perhaps he has to rethink the engineering on that one.<\/p>\n<p>The boat pushed the boundaries in every way. \u00a0Not your typical bowsprit.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6193\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/download.jpg\" alt=\"download\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/>Lighting? \u00a0Talk about complicated construction. \u00a0Can you say points of (water) egress?<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6192\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/1-2-16-018.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/images-1.jpg\" alt=\"images-1\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/>I wonder if the windows on this building leak. \u00a0I&#8217;ll bet that he doesn&#8217;t have to live in it on a rainy day at anchor, so perhaps that&#8217;s OK.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6196\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/images.jpg\" alt=\"images\" width=\"260\" height=\"194\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another boat that Pete illustrated is Kismet. \u00a0I spied her in Ft Lauderdale and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=4104\">included her in a post<\/a>, last year. \u00a0She&#8217;s so big, at over 300&#8242;, that my blog won&#8217;t fit Pete&#8217;s illustration of her. \u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6198\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Kismet-02.jpg\" alt=\"kismet-02\" width=\"700\" height=\"699\"
