Back to real life for me."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Monday afternoon, I am alone aboard and the boat is all snug in her slip, er shed. \u00a0We arrived in Ft Lauderdale at dawn today, just as the eastern horizon was brightening. \u00a0<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6163\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/9-12-16b-021.jpg\" alt=\"9-12-16b-021\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/9-12-16b-021.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/9-12-16b-021-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Now, here&#8217;s an amazing coincidence&#8230; \u00a0You may recall that the first thing I saw as I boarded the ferry in New London to join the boat was a sub and, as luck would have it, \u00a0that was the last thing I saw as we headed into the Port Everglades channel into Ft Lauderdale. \u00a0\u00a0No AIS but I am pretty confident that she wasn&#8217;t the USS New Mexico. \u00a0 Note the port running light. \u00a0\u00a0How about subs as bookends to an amazing trip? \u00a0You can&#8217;t make this stuff up. \u00a0 Really&#8230; \u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6159\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/9-12-16b-035.jpg\" alt=\"9-12-16b-035\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/9-12-16b-035.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/9-12-16b-035-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>It looked like Ft Lauderdale had it&#8217;s own little rain cloud hanging over it. \u00a0Well, not so little.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6158\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/9-12-16b-031.jpg\" alt=\"9-12-16b-031\" width=\"700\" height=\"1050\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/9-12-16b-031.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/9-12-16b-031-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/9-12-16b-031-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/9-12-16b-031-533x800.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>As we entered the channel, we passed this pontoon boat heading out. \u00a0Back in the early 70s everyone thought it would be a great idea to make an artificial reef out of two million discarded tires tied together and sunk off of the beach. \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6160\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/9-12-16b-036.jpg\" alt=\"9-12-16b-036\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/9-12-16b-036.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/9-12-16b-036-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Well, it turned out to be a really bad idea as nothing will grown on them and now the fastenings that hold all of them together are breaking down and tires are beginning to wash up on the beach. \u00a0Some have even drifted as far north as the Carolinas. \u00a0 Oops. \u00a0 \u00a0This guy has the contract to remove them one by one and he&#8217;s only able to go out about half the time and brings in something like 30 tires at a time. \u00a0Do the math. \u00a02,000,000 divided by 30 tires.<\/p>\n<p>Coincidentally, way back when, the project was christened &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Osborne_Reef\">The Osborne Reef&#8221;<\/a>. No relation, I assure you. \u00a0Besides, they spell it with an &#8220;e&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Like so many best laid plans, the reef &#8220;seemed like a good idea at the time&#8221;, Oops! \u00a0It&#8217;s going to take years and years to fix as they began removing tires back in 2009 and they aren&#8217;t even part way done. \u00a0 This guy will probably be at this project for the rest of his life. \u00a0And you wondered where those tires off of your old AMC Hornet went, Sheryl. \u00a0Now you know<\/p>\n<p>Just after clearing the 17th street bridge we turned left into the first canal. \u00a0 It looked impossibly tight to me.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6161\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/9-12-16b-045.jpg\" alt=\"9-12-16b-045\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/9-12-16b-045.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/9-12-16b-045-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>We approached the boat house on the left. \u00a0It&#8217;s the only facility like it in Florida. It was originally built to house a boat that one of the owner&#8217;s cousins has and still keeps there. \u00a0It costs $12,500 a month to keep your boat here, and they have to pay year round, even if they aren&#8217;t there, so they don&#8217;t loose their spot.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes they find themselves paying for three slips at the same time in various places so they won&#8217;t loose their spot. Speaking of &#8220;slips&#8221; that word sounds entirely to tiny for such a big space. \u00a0Perhaps &#8220;maw&#8221; would be more descriptive word. \u00a0&#8220;Let&#8217;s keep the yacht in the spectator. \u00a0 &#8220;No biggie, we&#8217;ve done this thousands of times although it&#8217;s a bit trickier in the dark.&#8221; \u00a0Show-off!<\/p>\n<p>The distance between the shed opening and the far side of the canal is shorter than the boat is long. \u00a0This means that they have to put the bow into the shed on an angle and slowly work the stern around without raking down the side of the 80&#8242; sailboat that&#8217;s tied up across the canal. \u00a0As all of this is happening, the captain can&#8217;t even see the stern and has to rely on the First Mate Pete to guide him. \u00a0&#8220;2&#8242; clearance Cap, you&#8217;re in great shape.&#8221; \u00a0Really, 2&#8242;?<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6144\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>The chef, stationed up on the bow, held up fingers to let the captain know how much distance there was between the starboard bow and tons of concrete. \u00a0At one point just two fingers went up. \u00a0 Two feet and they didn&#8217;t even have a fender out in case things went south. \u00a0 No fenders out because there wasn&#8217;t enough room to squeeze in a fender between the boat and dock. \u00a0YIIIKES!<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6145\" the last line and washing the salt off. \u00a0I can&#8217;t say that I blame them as they haven&#8217;t had a break in 3 1\/2 months.<\/p>\n<p>In a few days they will be hard at work again chipping (poor choice of words) away at Captain Mark&#8217;s to-do list. \u00a0No rest for the weary.<\/p>\n<p>Me? \u00a0I&#8217;m flying back home tomorrow to renew work on my own list. \u00a0I expect that the lawn will need mowing. \u00a0Real life, here I come.<\/p>\n<p>Captain Mark? \u00a0Need crew? \u00a0Take me away. \u00a0I may be available but not until I finish remodeling the master
