It\u2019s Saturday morning and we are on a mooring here in Sag Harbor, \u201cthe\u201d harbor in The Hamptons, where the big money plays and play they do.<\/p>\n

Sag Harbor has been off limits to us or many years as the harbor has the distinction of being the most expensive place on the east coast to get a mooring, even more expensive than Nantucket.\u00a0 The moorings here are $2\/ft per day.\u00a0 So, for Pandora\u2019s 47\u2019, that would be close to $100 per night and we’d still have to make your way ashore in a rubber dink. \u00a0Horrifying.<\/p>\n

However all is not lost. \u00a0Essex Yacht Club maintains two moorings here in the harbor so we can camp out here for a few days and we don\u2019t have to pay anything for the privilege of being here.\u00a0 \u00a0Well, we don\u2019t have to pay till we go ashore at least as nothing is free in this town.<\/p>\n

However, I think it\u2019s safe to assume that we are about the ONLY ones not paying, and I am sure that they are plenty happy to pay big for the privilege of \u201cbeing seen\u201d among the \u201cglitterati\u201d, the \u201cwho\u2019s who\u201d of New York Society and entertainment.<\/p>\n

The local \u201crag\u201d Dan\u2019s Papers, lists benefit events being held and there are literally dozens each month, offering many opportunities for the 1% set to show that while they don\u2019t pay taxes, they are willing and able to support any number of causes and happy to be seen doing it.\u00a0 I\u2019ll bet that this area is the ONLY one in the U.S. where there is a local paper that actually lists the top billionaires that keep a home here, include their picture, the name of their \u201ccurrent\u201d wife, note what they paid for their home and how much they are worth.<\/p>\n

Want to know who\u2019s the \u201cfairest\u201d of them all?\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s Mayor Bloomberg at a cool, make that a very cool, $48.3 billion and his home here is a 22,000 sq\/ft on 35 acres.\u00a0 You should feel sorry for Lloyd Blankfein, the CEO of Goldman Sachs, as he\u2019s only worth a paltry $1.1 billion.\u00a0 Poor Lloyd.<\/p>\n

Anyway, no shortage of folks with plenty of green to spend and spend it they do. Poor little Pandora among the big kids.\u00a0 And, some of the \u201ckids\u201d look pretty grown up to me.<\/p>\n

How about this one?\u00a0 She carries her own Mini, complete with the name of the yacht, Indiscretion<\/em> on the side.\u00a0 \"8-27-16aI\u2019ll bet that it\u2019s safe to say that their dink has more HP than the Mini.\u00a0 \u201cHoney?\u201d \u201cYes, Buffy, what is it?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cOh, I think that our Mini looks just adorable aboard Indiscretion<\/em> but I just don\u2019t feel comfortable as it was your ex that chose the color\u201d.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s nice honey but can we talk about it when I\u2019m finished reading Baron\u2019s?\u201d<\/p>\n

And the \u201cdinks\u201d on some of these \u201cmegas\u201d are quite impressive. If Darth Vader wanted one I\u2019ll bet that he\u2019d pick this.\"8-26-16aHow about this lovely? She\u2019s well into the \u201cmega\u201d range and yet has the lines of a small sport boat.\u00a0 Note the crew on the bow.\u00a0 They look totally teeny tiny up there.\u00a0 I\u2019ll bet her \u201ccarbon footprint\u201d could squash a billionaire like a gnat.\u00a0\"8-27-16aHowever, all the yachts here aren\u2019t \u201cmega\u201d.\u00a0 How about the latest in a line of beauties owned by Billy Joel, Argos<\/em>.\u00a0 I recognized the guy who takes care of Billy\u2019s boats from an article I saw a few years ago in Soundings, a boating newspaper.\u00a0 Billy has very nice taste in boats. \"8-27-16aFrom any angle.
\n\"8-26-16aScout<\/em>, which I have seen in Newport, is a beauty. \u00a0\u00a0Yes, I\u2019d enjoy a G&T aboard her.\"8-27-16aAnd, if you can\u2019t afford MEGA you can always put mega HP on your micro yacht.\u00a0 This one has 1,400hp.\u00a0 I\u2019ll bet that she can outrun all but the fastest 1%.\"8-26-16aIn the parking lot near the marina there are some very nice cars that fit just fine in the neighborhood.\u00a0 Love these two, the Aston Martin and the beachy thing.\u00a0 Note the mega hydrangea behind them.\u00a0 It seems that flowers love the climate here too.\u00a0\"8-26-16aThe florist in town was getting ready for the weekend.\u00a0 All of these phalaenopsis orchids were in a room that said \u201call the flowers in this room are sold\u201d.\u00a0 White sells well here.\"8-26-16aNot to worry, there were plenty still ready for you to take home.\u00a0 \"8-26-16aThe staff had to work out on the front lawn to arrange all the flowers that had been ordered.\u00a0 There were many dozens of red rose arrangements being prepared for just one Friday night party.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know anywhere else that celebrates white like the Hamptons.\u00a0 We saw a number of stores that only had white. \u00a0It’s tough to be a “mega consumer” so one less decision about color is a big time-saver. \u00a0\u00a0\"8-26-16bWhile it wasn\u2019t white, a very nice mega planter in downtown Sag Harbor.\u00a0 I wonder what the statue guy thinks of what Sag has become? \u00a0 I\u2019ll bet that he wishes he had held onto the property he owned longer so he could afford something mega himself. \u00a0\"8-26-16aNice view down main street for him though. \u00a0\"8-26-16aAnd speaking of flowers, which I sort of was, we rented a car and drove around and visited some wineries.\u00a0 Along the way we spied this amazing field of sunflowers.\u00a0 I nearly rear-ended someone who had stopped to take a photo too.\u00a0\"8-26-16aNo, we hadn\u2019t had too many tastings, not yet anyway.\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019ll admit that we visited our first winery before noon.\u00a0 But, it was only a very little taste. \u00a0Ok, it was just a little tastes of five different lovely whites.\u00a0 Just five or was it ten sips? Whatever\u2026 Besides, we had to be absolutely certain that we liked it.<\/p>\n

It was also good to confirm that the wines were made in a very clean winery.\u00a0 Love the stainless.\u00a0\"8-26-16bNo dirty wooden barrels in sight. \u00a0\u00a0\"8-26-16bWhat a relief.\u00a0 We only drink hygienically made wine, of course.<\/p>\n

“Look Brenda, I’ll bet these are wine grapes!”\"8-26-16aWe drove along the south fork, up the north fork, \u00a0took two ferries across Shelter Island and back to Sag Harbor.\u00a0\"8-26-16bLet me tell you, it\u2019s the most expensive per mile of any ferry that you will ever take.\u00a0 Each ride takes less than ten minutes, including docking. \u00a0Total, one way, \u00a0$30<\/p>\n

Impressive?\u00a0 Don\u2019t forget \u201cif you have to ask what it costs, you can\u2019t afford it\u201d.\u00a0 Well, I can for one day.\u00a0 After that, not so sure. \u00a0\u00a0We stopped for yet another glass of wine at this lovely hotel on Shelter.\u00a0 What a spot. \u00a0\"8-26-16bCan\u2019t recall the name but where else can you have two glasses of wine on a lovely afternoon and spend $40, with tip of course?\u00a0 However, if you are willing to have sparking water, it\u2019s only $10++.\u00a0 Such a deal.<\/p>\n

Yes, Sag Harbor is a very nice spot indeed and it\u2019s fun to be here hanging out with the big kids even if we only sort of fit in because EYC maintains a mooring here.\u00a0\u00a0 Well, I expect that there are plenty of others that only look like they fit in.<\/p>\n

Tonight, dinner at the American Hotel. \u00a0In the garden room…of course.\u00a0\"8-26-16aAfter that, well, we\u2019ll be out of money and have to head home.\u00a0\u00a0 Yes, this is indeed the playground of the \u201cbig kids\u201d and I while I have more in common with the \u201clittle people\u201d I do have a boat.\u00a0 Besides, my mom has always told me that I\u2019m big and not even a little bit grey.<\/p>\n
