{"id":5958,"date":"2016-08-04T13:07:48","date_gmt":"2016-08-04T13:07:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=5958"},"modified":"2016-08-04T13:07:48","modified_gmt":"2016-08-04T13:07:48","slug":"is-there-anything-more-maine-than-schooners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=5958","title":{"rendered":"Is there anything more Maine than Schooners?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Arguably, there\u2019s nothing more \u201cMaine\u201d than wooden schooners and I had a generous &#8220;helping&#8221; of them a few days ago in Somes Sound on Mt Desert Island.<\/p>\n<p>As is the case with so much of life&#8217;s experiences, it\u2019s all about being in the right place at the right time. \u00a0 And, as luck would have it, we were as 2016 is the 100<sup>th<\/sup> year of the founding of Acadia National Park and the organizer of the Corinthians Cruise found a way for our fleet to participate in a parade of schooners up Somes Sound. \u00a0And, as if that\u2019s not enough, we were to lead the parade up one of the most beautiful pieces of water in all of Maine.<\/p>\n<p>And it gets even better.\u00a0 To make the sight even more of a spectacle for the thousands that watched from shore, about 35 of our member\u2019s boats dressed ship with signal flags galore.<\/p>\n<p>We waited at the mouth of Somes Sound for the schooners to approach as they emerged from the summer afternoon haze. \u00a0Well, actually, there wasn&#8217;t much of a haze but I liked the sound of that. \u00a0<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5962\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/8-2-16a-045-1.jpg\" alt=\"8-2-16a 045\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/8-2-16a-045-1.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/8-2-16a-045-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>As the schooners assembled to begin their run up the sound they tacked back and forth. \u00a0\u00a0This one came pretty close to Pandora&#8217;s bow. \u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5960\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/8-2-16a-038.jpg\" alt=\"8-2-16a 038\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/8-2-16a-038.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/8-2-16a-038-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Our fleet began to head up the sound ahead of the schooners in single file. Well, sort of single file. \u00a0Then the word came from the Master of the Corinthians, \u201churry up, they are going to pass us\u201d. \u00a0 And hurry we did.<img decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Things got a bit chaotic after a while and we ended up in more of a clump than single file.\u00a0 Chaos or not, it was a joyous sight.\u00a0 My friends Alice and Andy have a cute little tug called Loon.\u00a0 It was fun to see her chugging along with the fleet. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5963\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>As the schooners passed, the perspective changed and the afternoon breeze freshened.<\/p>\n<p>The schooners turned to short tack back down the sound into the wind.\u00a0 It was impressive to see them maneuver in so tight a space.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5968\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Our Master Leigh was aboard \u201cAll that Jazz\u201d, leading the fleet.\u00a0 To see the largest schooner in the fleet tack in front of his boat was quite a sight and a fitting way to finish up the parade.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5969\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>We all scrambled to the local boat yard to pick up moorings for the evening.\u00a0 Like the rest of the day, and to use a phrase that my late father loved, it was \u201corganized chaos\u201d.\u00a0 Yes Dad, and what joyous chaos it was.<\/p>\n<p>This trip is my 16<sup>th<\/sup> to Maine and I have to say that to be in a parade with these magnificent schooner was one of the highlights of those many \u00a0years.<\/p>\n<p>What a day. \u00a0I was blessed to be a part of such an iconic spectacle that makes Maine, well,
