{"id":5940,"date":"2016-08-01T16:30:05","date_gmt":"2016-08-01T16:30:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=5940"},"modified":"2016-08-01T16:30:05","modified_gmt":"2016-08-01T16:30:05","slug":"the-small-boats-of-maine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=5940","title":{"rendered":"The Small Boats of Maine."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anyone who\u2019s cruised to Maine, and certainly those who love wooden boats, have made the pilgrimage to the Wooden Boat School and the headquarters for Wooden Boat Magazine.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0So, yesterday the cruise headed there from SW Harbor, a distance just short of 20 miles.<\/p>\n<p>As we made our way there yesterday were we passed the iconic Bass Harbor Light.\u00a0 I believe that this is the most photographed light in Maine.\u00a0\u00a0 You can certainly see why.\u00a0 She\u2019s a beauty.<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5944\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/7-31-16a-021.jpg\" alt=\"7-31-16a 021\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/7-31-16a-021.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/7-31-16a-021-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Of course, that\u2019s not the only one to feast your eyes on.\u00a0 How about this one?\u00a0 It\u2019s still active but unlike the Bass light, this one is someone\u2019s home.\u00a0 I wonder how well they sleep when the fog horn is blasting away.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5953\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/8-1-16a-030.jpg\" alt=\"8-1-16a 030\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/8-1-16a-030.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/8-1-16a-030-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Unfortunately, we weren\u2019t able to sail yesterday or again today as the wind was just too light.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the downsides of club cruises as the meals and stops are all planned in advance.\u00a0 When Brenda and I cruise, we wait to move when there is wind and therefore spend a lot more time sailing.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s hope that by the time the fleet heads back toward NE Harbor in a few days, that we won\u2019t have to beat our heads against the wall to head east. Uncharacteristically, the wind is forecast to be out of an easterly direction for the next few days so we\u2019ll have to wait and see.<\/p>\n<p>So, back to the Wooden Boat School, a place that is a must stop for anyone that admires beautiful wooden boats.\u00a0 Many credit Jon Wilson, founder of Wooden Boat magazine, with the revival of wooden boat restoration and modern construction.\u00a0 It takes someone like that to galvanize interest in a dying art.\u00a0 Clearly the tide has turned and wooden boats are a vital part of the boating community these days.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of lovely craft, I took a turn around the harbor and photographed some of the lovely craft that are moored there.<\/p>\n<p>This is a sweet canoe stern launch.\u00a0 Very elegant lines.<img decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>I think that this is a Herreshoff 12\u00bd or perhaps a Haven 12\u00bd designed by Joel White as centerboard takeoff on that classic design.\u00a0\u00a0 The varnish work is perfect.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5947\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/7-31-16a-033.jpg\" be wooden.\u00a0 However, there is a very active fleet in SW Harbor and was racing yesterday afternoon.\u00a0\u00a0 Each spinnaker had a unique design and made quite a sight as they raced to the School are of classic designs, there are plenty of beautiful wooden boats being crafted in Maine of thoroughly modern designs.\u00a0 How about this wonderful gentleman\u2019s launch that I spied at a marina in SW Harbor?\u00a0 She\u2019s a real head turner.\u00a0 They had better never let the varnish work get away from them.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>I\u2019d say that Pandora takes \u201cmodern\u201d to yet another level.\u00a0 Not a lot of varnish on her.\u00a0 However, I just love the way she looks
