{"id":5807,"date":"2016-05-29T19:17:06","date_gmt":"2016-05-29T19:17:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=5807"},"modified":"2016-05-29T20:06:02","modified_gmt":"2016-05-29T20:06:02","slug":"if-you-cant-beat-them-buy-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=5807","title":{"rendered":"If you can&#8217;t beat em, buy em."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Memorial Day weekend and we are NOT\u00a0out sailing aboard Pandora. \u00a0After a winter aboard we are both happy to hang out &#8220;on the hard&#8221; and enjoy some time at our &#8220;land home&#8221; here near the beautiful CT River.<\/p>\n<p>As I was catching up on all of the snail mail that had piled up\u00a0while we were afloat, and let me tell you that a LOT accumulated in the nearly 5 months we were away, I spied a reference to the winner of this year&#8217;s Lora Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta held in March. \u00a0The winner was P2, a boat that we had raced against two years ago in Newport. \u00a0When I say &#8220;we&#8221; I am referring to our time aboard the 182&#8242; ketch that we were invited to sail aboard in that race that was held in\u00a0Newport.<\/p>\n<p>When we were aboard Marie, she was the LARGEST yacht in Newport Harbor and let me tell you, there are a LOT of REALLY BIG yachts in Newport. \u00a0 Marie has done well on the superyacht racing \u00a0scene but not quite as well as P2, a really high tech composite yacht that we raced against. \u00a0So, what is a superyacht owner to do when they loose a race to another? \u00a0You buy her, of course.<\/p>\n<p>It it\u00a0seems that P2, which we spied in Ft Lauderdale this winter, has been sold, to none other than Ed, the owner of Marie. \u00a0 Here&#8217;s a recent shot of P2 that I snagged from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boatinternational.com\/yachts\/the-superyacht-directory\/p2--54287#overview\">Boat International magazine<\/a>&#8216;s description of P2. \u00a0The shot was taken in Ft Lauderdale near the Los Olas bridge. \u00a0This is a remarkable boat if you can call a 150&#8217; yacht a boat. \u00a0<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5813\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/p2-in-ft-lauderdale.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/p2-in-ft-lauderdale.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/p2-in-ft-lauderdale-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/p2-in-ft-lauderdale-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/p2-in-ft-lauderdale-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/p2-in-ft-lauderdale-800x450.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/>Hey wait, Pandora looks a bit like her. \u00a0Right? \u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5712\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/4-28-16a-002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/4-28-16a-002.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/4-28-16a-002-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Well Pandora looks like at a minuscule 47&#8242; version if you squint your eyes really, really tight. \u00a0Perhaps Pandora could be a tender to P2, a really little one. \u00a0 Here&#8217;s an idea. \u00a0As Ed still owns Marie, his 180&#8242; ketch, he can use her as a tender, or perhaps a better description would to call her a &#8220;hotel&#8221;, when Ed is out on P2, doing her stuff, tearing up the racing circuit.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a video of P2. \u00a0What an amazing boat! \u00a0<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z1239eP3XDI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>Ed&#8217;s growing &#8220;collection&#8221; of yachts also includes an earlier build, his &#8220;smallest&#8221; superyacht, the mere 110&#8242; Tenacious which you can charter alone or as part of a package including his private island in the Exuma Chain in the Bahamas, Over Yonder Cay. \u00a0 Tenacious, compared to Marie and P2, is diminutive (HA!) at a mere 110&#8242;. However, like her big sister, she has a brace of cannon aboard and Ed isn&#8217;t bashful about using them when the mood strikes and it does often.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a video of Tenacious filmed along with \u00a0his island, Over Yonder Cay. \u00a0Check out the bright yellow seaplane, which I just love, that will whisk you there to begin your charter. \u00a0<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6Jy9aD_-WS0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>That wonderful yellow seaplane was there when Brenda and I visited Over Yonder this winter. \u00a0She&#8217;s quite a machine. \u00a0 Here&#8217;s some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=5359\">highlights from our visit<\/a>, including the main house which we <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=3065\">toured on our last visit<\/a>, a few years ago that occupies the highest point in the Exuma chain with remarkable views.<\/p>\n<p>I just came across this new video of OYC. \u00a0 And yes, OYC is really is as nice as the video suggests.<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CqUxSAsI8zI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nHow about a video of Marie sailing shortly after her launch in the Netherlands a few years ago. \u00a0The audio is a mix of, I think Dutch, and some English. It&#8217;s a great tour of the boat too. \u00a0I&#8217;d say that she is still the &#8220;Queen&#8221; of Ed&#8217;s growing &#8220;fleet&#8221;.<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6Woun27GYGo\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>Alas,\u00a0she&#8217;s just not quite as fast as the carbon fiber P2. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a video of the race we were &#8220;in&#8221; where P2 beat Marie.<br \/>\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dSMbdqEXjaw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>Being the generous guy that he is, Ed will give you the opportunity to charter <em>P2<\/em> and perhaps win a few races yourself. \u00a0Here&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teamp2.net\/home.html\">charter page for P2<\/a>, so get on it!<\/p>\n<p>I thought that this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boatinternational.com\/luxury-yacht-life\/owners-experiences\/on-board-with-over-yonder-cay-owner-ed-bosarge--24757\">article from Boat International <\/a>about Ed and his two &#8220;old&#8221; yachts, <em>Marie<\/em> and <em>Tenacious <\/em>was interesting. \u00a0Perhaps they will want to interview him again now that he owns P2 as well.<\/p>\n<p>So, after coming to grips that there was a yacht with a better racing history than Marie, Ed what every racer wants to do, but usually can&#8217;t, he bought the boat that beat him. \u00a0Of course, if you can&#8217;t beat em, buy em. \u00a0And, if you want to know what it cost&#8230; \u00a0 And, if you have to ask, well you can&#8217;t afford it.<\/p>\n<p>But wait, there&#8217;s more. \u00a0If Ed loves sailing he&#8217;s also pretty happy to spend time around vintage airplanes and is a benefactor to a museum in Texas <em>The Texas Flying Legends. \u00a0<\/em>I found this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.warbirdsnews.com\/warbirds-news\/texas-flying-legends-museum-overview.html\">article from a publication Warbird News<\/a> that provides a good amount of information about the museum&#8217;s\u00a0&#8220;fleet&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=2152\">did a post a while back<\/a> about\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/texasflyinglegends.org\/\">The Texas Flying Legends<\/a><\/em> and an airshow that they put on in St Barths. \u00a0In that post, I mentioned that Marie was kept at <a href=\"http:\/\/overyondercay.com\/\">Over Yonder<\/a> but was wrong. \u00a0It&#8217;s Tenacious that&#8217;s there. \u00a0It was a fun post so I won&#8217;t fix the mistake. \u00a0Call it &#8220;editorial license&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps I&#8217;ll close, on this Labor Day Weekend, with a fitting tribute to the men that flew these amazing warbirds and sacrificed so much to allow us to have the freedom that we all enjoy today.<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_BwU2teg5RA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Memorial Day weekend and we are NOT\u00a0out sailing aboard Pandora. \u00a0After a winter aboard we are both happy to hang out &#8220;on the hard&#8221; and enjoy some time at our &#8220;land home&#8221; here near the beautiful CT River.
