{"id":5359,"date":"2016-02-20T15:44:50","date_gmt":"2016-02-20T15:44:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=5359"},"modified":"2016-02-20T15:44:50","modified_gmt":"2016-02-20T15:44:50","slug":"here-is-over-yonder-for-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=5359","title":{"rendered":"Here is Over Yonder for us."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Saturday morning and Brenda and I are chilling out at Over Yonder Cay. \u00a0It&#8217;s pretty windy so we are pinned to the dock and couldn&#8217;t leave even if we wanted to, which we don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>The wind is blowing about 20 from the east but it should ease up in a day or so. \u00a0For now, it&#8217;s shore time for us. \u00a0 Tonight we will cook out at the pavilion near the beach, \u00a0a beautiful spot with a great kitchen and it&#8217;s NOT BEING USED so we can hang out there all by ourselves. \u00a0 Brenda tells me that dinner will be flank steak, smashed twice baked potatoes and grilled veggies. \u00a0Yum.<\/p>\n<p>Last night we were visited aboard Pandora for dinner by Ethan, Jamie and their new baby Levi as well as Jamie&#8217;s mother Sherry . \u00a0 Levi was so good. So was everyone else but you know how babies can be when grownups keep them out too late. \u00a0Brenda doing her thing practicing at being a grandmother when Levi finally decided to cry a little. \u00a0I expect that he saved his full wail for when his parents finally decided to go to bed. \u00a0 Better them than me. \u00a0 \u00a0Been there, done that. \u00a0Such a good baby. \u00a0Love the camo pants.\u00a0 <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5363\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-012.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-012.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-012-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-012-600x800.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Ethan gave me a tour of the island today. \u00a0I was particularly interested in the new RO system that they just installed last week. \u00a0It&#8217;s just huge. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5364\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-015.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-015.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-015-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>This is the flow meter showing that it is producing 48 gallons per minute. \u00a0Amazing.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5365\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-016.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-016.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-016-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-016-600x800.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>That means that the capacity of the system is 70,000 gallons per 24 hours. \u00a0 No need to ration water here. \u00a0No kidding. \u00a0 The system aboard Pandora only generates 6 gallons per hour. \u00a0Actually, that&#8217;s more my speed and a lot more pocketbook friendly.<\/p>\n<p>And, all of the power for the island comes from solar and wind. \u00a0 There are three huge turbines and about 1.5 acres of solar panels.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5372\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16b-052.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16b-052.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16b-052-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>While most of the power comes from solar, I personally just love the turbines. They make a gentle (well, gentle for something two hundred feet tall) whooshing sound. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5370\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16b-048.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16b-048.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16b-048-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16b-048-600x800.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>They have backup generators but they only get used a few times per year. \u00a0 But hey, when you need em, you need em.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5366\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-017.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-017.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-017-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>The island also consumes a great deal of manpower with about 30 people working on most any day. \u00a0Each morning at about 06:30 someone from the island takes a skiff over to the local settlements, Black Point and Staniel Cay to pick up about 20 day workers. \u00a0And, as an added bonus, if you work here you are fed\u00a0breakfast and lunch, compliments of OYC. \u00a0Such a deal.<\/p>\n<p>I took a run to drop off some folks last night. \u00a0What a ride. \u00a0And I thought that 9kts on Pandora was fast. \u00a0 Can you say white knuckle?<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5362\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-010.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-010.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-010-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>When we stopped at the dock everyone scrambled off in an instant. \u00a0In spite of the bumpy ride and 40kts boat speed, everyone (but me) just casually sat on the gunnels, checking their e-mail and looking at Facebook. \u00a0 Dressed in only shorts and a t-shirt, I immediately realized that I had made a mistake when everyone else showed up in hoodies and wind breakers. \u00a0 It was pretty brisk with the 40+ kt apparent winds as we blasted along. \u00a0I have noticed that when Bahamians get behind the wheel of a powerboat, the only speed that they know is &#8220;full out&#8221;. \u00a0 \u00a0In this case, all 500 horses screaming.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5361\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-008.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-008.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-008-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>I guess it&#8217;s like just about like any other commute. \u00a0 However, for the &#8220;big kids&#8221; this is the preferred mode of transportation. \u00a0 I can&#8217;t say that I blame them. \u00a0What a ride. \u00a0And, there are two of them available at all times. \u00a0 It&#8217;s sort of like Enterprise Car rental for the .01%. \u00a0&#8220;We pick you up.&#8221; \u00a0And, they do, and in style.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5360\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-004.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-004.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/2-20-16a-004-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>I understand that the plane was painted yellow by the previous owner because he flew\u00a0all over South America and he wanted to have a plane that would show up as much as possible if he ended up ditching in the jungle. \u00a0 Good thinking. \u00a0It looks just awesome. \u00a0My dad would have &#8220;gone bonkers&#8221; (as he used to say) over this one.<\/p>\n<p>And the pilot Scott, carefully washes down every inch of the plane (with part of that 70,000 gallons of RO water) after each flight\u00a0and wipes it down with a special anti-corrosion liquid. \u00a0 So, what kind of anchor does a sea plane carry? \u00a0Fortress aluminum, what else? \u00a0You probably didn&#8217;t even know it carried an anchor anyway.<\/p>\n<p>The views from the plane must look like this but from WAY higher up.
