{"id":4762,"date":"2015-08-02T15:11:27","date_gmt":"2015-08-02T15:11:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=4762"},"modified":"2015-08-03T11:01:31","modified_gmt":"2015-08-03T11:01:31","slug":"their-blog-makes-mine-look-well-different","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=4762","title":{"rendered":"Their blog makes mine look, well, different."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After the last 500+ posts I have somehow convinced myself that my blog is pretty entertaining. \u00a0Well, it is entertaining for me to write and my mom likes it. \u00a0But then, even though I am &#8220;vertically challenged&#8221; she says that I am big. \u00a0Anyway, doting mother set aside, I have been pretty sure that my posts are more interesting than most, at least. \u00a0This is what I imagine I look like with a halo and all. \u00a0 Mom agrees.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_0091.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4763\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_0091.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_0091.jpg 525w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_0091-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a>I can say with confidence that some of my posts are more interesting than those who just put down a lot of waypoints that prove that they were somewhere and write something about what speed and compass course they were\u00a0traveling.<\/p>\n<p>However, today that warm feeling of superiority was all but shattered when I was reading FaceBook and stumbled on the blog of Cygnus III, written by a couple, well perhaps by the guy, or bloke as a true Brit, which he is, might call himself. \u00a0 Now, with my blogging self image shattered, I feel more like I am marooned on a desert island with all hope lost. \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-19-14a-010.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4247\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-19-14a-010.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-19-14a-010.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-19-14a-010-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>&#8220;Bob, give us a break. \u00a0Stop it&#8230; NOW!&#8221; \u00a0 OK, OK, yes, perhaps I&#8217;ll live and muddle through another day. \u00a0However, it&#8217;s apparent that the site of the travels of Mark and Angelina, a couple that live aboard their Oyster 45 sailboat Cygnus III. are setting the bar a bit higher for me and my lowly site.<\/p>\n<p>They mostly dispense with the we-went-there sort of coverage and dig down to the &#8220;marrow&#8221; of what it&#8217;s like to live aboard and cruise, and they do it with flare.<\/p>\n<p>In their own words, I give you&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3><em>So what\u2019s this Cygnus III website all about?<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><em>Well, in 2010 we decided to sell our Dyson hoover and the house we kept it in to buy a sailing yacht called\u00a0<b>Cygnus III <\/b>to live aboard.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We wanted to go\u00a0sailing into a striking sunset, visit paradise and get free coconuts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It was all pretty simple really. If we got lost along the way we could just pull in somewhere and ask directions.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>What no one told us was how bleeding scary the sea is! There\u2019s, like, rocks and storms and shit!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So these are the tales of our hapless voyage on our sailing yacht\u00a0<a title=\"More details of our yacht, Cygnus III\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cygnus3.com\/the-crew\/the-boat\/\">Cygnus III<\/a>\u00a0and the places and predicaments we have found ourselves in.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Well put, and as I read excerpts from their site aloud to Brenda, we found ourselves chuckling and sometimes laughing out loud at their observations about what it&#8217;s like to spend months together on a small boat and to live to tell the tale.<\/p>\n<p>Often, when we are talking to fellow cruisers about what it&#8217;s like to live aboard, there seem to be a few basic truths about the questions we all get\u00a0from those who have never left the dock or, ye gads, \u00a0slept aboard OVERNIGHT.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what the Cygnus crews have to say that and more&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3><em>How will you know when you truly become a live aboard?<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><em>If your living on a boat these descriptions may ring your ships bell?<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>When staying in a house you always come down stairs backwards<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You find yourself bleeding from random places at random times.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You and your wife define \u201ctaking a break\u201d as moving about six feet apart and looking in opposite directions.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You avoid telling people you live on a boat just so you don\u2019t have to explain to them you actually sleep on it as well\u2026 again.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You think butter only comes in soft or liquid form.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You only have 3 cooking pots.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>When invited to dinner at someone\u2019s house you spend all night turning unnecessary lights off.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>When invited to dinner at someone\u2019s house you ask if you can do your laundry.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The doctor assumes your body covered in random bruises is a sign of physical abuse.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You are the only one who doesn\u2019t want to win the big screen TV at the charity raffle.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You think \u201cGame of thrones\u201d is something you do when two people need the toilet at once.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00a0Kids think you\u2019re the coolest person on earth. Adults think you have lost your marbles.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>When you don\u2019t like the neighbourhood you just move.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You are content knowing that sailing is code for boat repair in exotic places.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You can assemble a gourmet dinner using only one pot and mouldy cheese.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Doing laundry involves a net bag, a moving boat, and 50 feet of line.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>When asked for a piece of paper, you ask if they want course or fine.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You don\u2019t want anything for Christmas that isn\u2019t on a Kindle.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Cardboard boxes, wrappers, and packing are thrown away before getting onto the boat.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You define a good anchorage as one where you can get Wi-Fi.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Your wallet contains more boat cards than business cards<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You know what a boat card is.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>When visiting ashore, you wake everybody at daylight screaming \u201cWe\u2019re aground \u201cwhen you open your eyes and don\u2019t see water.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You define an easy chore as one where you don\u2019t have to pull everything out of the locker first.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You covet new solar panels more than a new car.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You can identify boats by the sound of their halyard slapping against their mast.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Removing things from the refrigerator is like playing Jenga.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>In shoe shops you go straight to the flip-flops.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You accidentally put your life jacket on when you get in a car.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You walk in the rain all the way back to your boat, carrying a backpack, a load of laundry,\u00a0 groceries destined to fall out of their bag at any second\u2026 all while thinking how lucky you are.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Filling the water tanks is a full day\u2019s work.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The only thing you do religiously on Sundays is wonder what day it is.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The first thing you do after setting the anchor is to see what other boats you know.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u00a0You talk to your boat and give parts of it stupid names.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You understand and pay attention to the entire weather forecast.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You spend weekends sitting in your cockpit with a boat hook beside you, waiting to fend off the next holiday charter boat.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Every time you consider buying something you have to decide what you\u2019ll get rid of to make room for it.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>When visiting ashore you look for instructions on how to use a push button toilet.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>A three minute hot shower is pure indulgence.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You covet your neighbour\u2019s engine more than his wife.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Ice cubes are the ultimate luxury.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You have to strap a bag full of water to your boom &amp; wait a few hours before you can take a hot shower.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You\u2019ve googled to see if there are any companies that make triangular bed sheets.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You know that duct tape was invented by God.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You only bring out real cups for fancy occasions.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Trying to find a partner to sail away with you isn\u2019t being romantic, it\u2019s kidnapping.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Your computer homepage is the Weather Service<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>You\u2019ve spent mornings standing naked on the deck of someone else\u2019s boat, adjusting halyards, lashing lines &amp;
