{"id":4702,"date":"2015-07-06T18:35:12","date_gmt":"2015-07-06T18:35:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=4702"},"modified":"2015-07-06T18:35:36","modified_gmt":"2015-07-06T18:35:36","slug":"at-sea-again-and-thinking-about-old-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=4702","title":{"rendered":"At sea again and thinking about old times."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s Monday morning and we are on a mooring in Cuttyhunk, a spot that brings back so many memories.\u00a0\u00a0 I am out with my friend Craig for a week as we head toward Nantucket.<\/p>\n<p>I have been visiting this harbor since the early 80s and have visited here in each of our six, count em, boats. \u00a0 Beginning with our first in the late 70s, that would be Tao and Sappho, our two Cape Cod catboats, Artemis, our 1962 Pearson Invicta yawl that I actually spied the first time, prior to buying her, here in Cuttyhunk,. \u00a0Elektra, our Tartan 37 and most recently Pandora, our SAGA 43.\u00a0 Being here brings back so many memories of summers past.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, last evening someone stopped to ask about the boat and when I confirmed that she\u2019s an Aerodyne 47 he told me that Rodger Martin, the designer of the boat, was here in the harbor on his own boat.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t stop to see him last night and unfortunately, he left early today so we didn\u2019t connect.\u00a0 Oh well, perhaps when I am in Newport as that\u2019s where his office is.\u00a0 Better luck next time.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, Cuttyhunk is a special place for me.\u00a0 I think that the last time I was here I think was when I visited here with my sons Rob and Chris and my dad.\u00a0 Dad died about a year ago. That trip, about 4 years ago and the last time that Dad was aboard.\u00a0 It was a very special trip. \u00a0As the sun set last night it took on a bright orange glow.\u00a0 Unfortunately, it doesn\u2019t show here but it turned a cherry red as it drifted toward the horizon.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/7-6-15b-002.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4705\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/7-6-15b-002.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/7-6-15b-002.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/7-6-15b-002-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>I can still remember the ethereal light that surrounded us when Dad and the boys were here with me. \u00a0That day we hiked up to the top of the hill on Cuttyhunk and posed on a picnic table.\u00a0 What a great day it was with three generations of Osborn boys.\u00a0 \u00a0A wonderful memory.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/the-boys-at-cuttyhunk.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4708\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/the-boys-at-cuttyhunk.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>Nearby, on another mooring, there is a lovely Marshall Catboat that is a dead ringer for our second boat, Sappho.\u00a0 I love the little gig rowing nearby too.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/7-6-15c-001.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4706\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/7-6-15c-001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/7-6-15c-001.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/7-6-15c-001-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>We left Essex on the 4<sup>th<\/sup> and spent the night at Fishers Island. \u00a0 You&#8217;d think that we were heading out for a month. \u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/7-6-15a-010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4703\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/7-6-15a-010.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/7-6-15a-010.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/7-6-15a-010-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0From Essex we made our way down the Sound there wasn\u2019t a breath of wind and \u00a0didn\u2019t arrive at Fisher\u2019s till after dark. \u00a0Along the way we were treated to a beautiful sunset which combined with the fireworks along the shore, made for some wonderful views.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/7-6-15a-012.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4704\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/7-6-15a-012.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/7-6-15a-012.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/7-6-15a-012-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>From Fishers we headed here, about 55 miles yesterday.\u00a0 The wind was right on our stern and freshened as the day progressed to give us a really nice run.\u00a0 By the time we got here it was blowing about 20kts which meant that picking up the mooring was a bit challenging. \u00a0The moorings in the harbor are packed very tight so there isn\u2019t much room for error.<\/p>\n<p>Today we head up to New Bedford and dinner with my good friend Patty, a fellow Corinthian.\u00a0 Patty was the first female Master of the group and is a great personality.\u00a0 It will be fun to spend time with her for a drink aboard Pandora.<\/p>\n<p>So much has changed since I first visited Cuttyhunk but nothing perhaps says it better than this picture of my friend Craig talking on the phone with our friend Brian.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cCan you hear me now?\u201d\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/7-6-15c-002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4707\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>Not really as the service here isn\u2019t great \u00a0but who back in the early 80s would have imagined that we\u2019d have phone service from aboard much less the ability for me to post from aboard.\u00a0 Pop quiz:\u00a0 Who decided that blogs should be called blogs, anyway?\u00a0 Hmm\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Well, writing this isn\u2019t getting us on with
