{"id":4472,"date":"2015-05-05T12:20:46","date_gmt":"2015-05-05T12:20:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=4472"},"modified":"2015-05-05T12:20:46","modified_gmt":"2015-05-05T12:20:46","slug":"pandoras-finally-ready-but-the-weathers-not","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=4472","title":{"rendered":"Pandora\u2019s finally ready but the weather\u2019s not."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #444444;\">It\u2019s Tuesday morning and, as Brenda would say, \u201cit\u2019s blowing a gale\u201d.\u00a0 Well, I don\u2019t think that gale is confirmed but it\u2019s plenty windy, let me tell you. \u00a0Not a good day to head out for a 1,000 mile run in a boat that I have never sailed. \u00a0 So, we wait&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday we left the boat yard where Ariel became Pandora with the application of the new name and hailing port of Newport RI.\u00a0 We are also sporting a new and very shiny pair of davits to pick up our dink, which is also very shiny as it\u2019s only a few months old.\u00a0\u00a0 Good news, the boat came with a brand new Caribe dink due to the previous owner turning in the \u201cslightly worn\u201d one for a warranty problem.\u00a0 It\u2019s very white, for the moment.<\/p>\n<p>I left Harbor Town Marina, where I am now, on Friday to head over to the boat yard to have the work done and settled in on what was supposed to take a day and a half at most.\u00a0 Alas, as things seem to go on boats, especially in sunny Florida where most move more S-L-O-W-L-Y than in NYC, the project stretched into four days with everything finally completed on Monday.\u00a0 Well, technically, it was three days as they don\u2019t work on Sundays. \u00a0 However, delayed or not, the work turned out quite well in the end. \u00a0The folks at the boatyard are very nice but it&#8217;s not the sort of place that you want to hang out compared to Harbor Town Marina which is a much nicer place at a much higher price.<\/p>\n<p>The yard sports all sorts of boats, some in various stages of decay. \u00a0These two commercial boats have been here for who knows how long. \u00a0I wonder if someone is still paying rent on the space they are taking up? \u00a0Anyone need a slightly worn fire-boat, cheap?<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/5-5-15a-009.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4481\" title=\"5-5-15a 009\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/5-5-15a-009.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/5-5-15a-009.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/5-5-15a-009-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>Believe it or now, someone actually paid money to haul this one. It looks like a science experiment gone badly. \u00a0Is that a prop under that\u00a0anemone? \u00a0And folks wonder why I am so anal about keeping Pandora so clean. \u00a0Beware, EVERYTHING dissolves into chaos&#8230;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/5-5-15a-011-Copy.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4482\" title=\"5-5-15a 011 sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>The boat yard is also very tight\u00a0with boats tied up every which way and I was very pleased to have the nifty bow thruster to turn around in what was an impossibly small basin to back into the slip. \u00a0And I should note that the pilings we squeezed into were less than two feet wider than the stern of the boat, not quite enough space to wedge into with a fender on each side. \u00a0 We had to step on the fenders to get them to squeeze in like partially deflated\u00a0balloons. \u00a0After securing to the dock we built a scaffolding off of\u00a0the stern so that the welder, Joe, could stand and work his magic.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/5-5-15a-002-Copy.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4473\" title=\"5-5-15a 002 - Copy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/5-5-15a-002-Copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" \u201ctacked\u201d individual pieces onto the structure and stepped back to be sure that everything was level and looked about right.\u00a0 Frame supports were bent into shape with brute force. \u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/5-5-15a-007-Copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4483\" title=\"5-5-15a 007 sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/span>After everything was secured the welding began in earnest and soon, well sort of soon, everything was ready for polishing. \u00a0 I was amazed that something that looked like this would eventually\u00a0gleam\u00a0brightly, but it did.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/5-5-15a-020-Copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4475\" title=\"5-5-15a 020 - Copy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/5-5-15a-020-Copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/5-5-15a-020-Copy.jpg 700w, looks great and was ready to fit the dink.\u00a0 My crew, Michael and Jim both shimmied out to the end of the frame to secure the blocks that will pull up the dink.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/5-5-15a-033.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4476\" title=\"5-5-15a 033\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #444444;\">I don\u2019t regard the arrangement of blocks to be quite worked out but it\u2019s quite serviceable for now as I use what I had on hand.\u00a0 More to come on this when I get back to CT and decide how to refine everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>CW, the sign guy, did a great job with the logo, based on the one from the \u201cold\u201d Pandora.\u00a0\u00a0 It\u2019s grey and silver which looks terrific on the dark green hull.\u00a0 Earlier in the day we pulled out of the slip and backed in bow first to be sure that there was plenty of room to apply the new name.<\/p>\n<p>He applied it perfectly from a floating dink.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/5-5-15a-030.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4477\" title=\"5-5-15a 030\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>So, all was done by mid-afternoon yesterday and we were ready to return to the marina.\u00a0 Not\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Oops. \u00a0The tide was to low, we were hard aground and couldn&#8217;t budge.\u00a0 Besides, the wind was blowing about 15kts on the beam (not good) and the distance between us and the boats to our lee was less than a boat length. \u00a0I had no idea how I was going to back Pandora out of the slip and turn her to get out in that tiny basin without banging into someone. \u00a0 From the front of the bow-sprit to the back of the davits is something like 53&#8242;. \u00a0Long boat.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an idea\u2026 Michael is a retired tug captain so let\u2019s have him jump into the dink and do his &#8220;tug thing&#8221; to keep us crashing into the other boats in the marina.<\/p>\n<p>So, after waiting another few hours for the tide to come up a littlemore, we powered off in reverse while Jim pulled with all his might to help \u201cooze\u201d our way out.\u00a0\u00a0 Michael did his magic and off we went with \u201cno loss of life\u201d as his wife Terri once famously quipped.<\/p>\n<p>Finally&#8230;out and on our way.\u00a0 It was a thrill for me to call the bridge tender\u00a0 and say \u201csailing vessel Pandora requesting an opening\u201d for the first time aboard \u201cNew Pandora\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>After docking back at Harbor Town Marina we all enjoyed a well earned G&amp;T, well actually, Jim prefers Rum and Tonic. \u00a0 \u00a0The bar as open aboard with some sightseeing on the side, for at least another day till this \u201cgale\u201d blows itself out and we can get underway.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, dink secure and we are ready&#8230;<a
