Burr\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #444444;\">It\u2019s Sunday morning and the temperature went down into the 30s last night so we left the heater running all night.\u00a0 That worked out pretty well.\u00a0 Glad that we have it.\u00a0 It is supposed to get warmer in the next few days but these cold fronts are wreaking havoc on the weather here.\u00a0 I had feared that we would encounter pretty cold weather by being this far north so early.\u00a0 No disappointment on that score, unfortunately.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Anyway, cold or not, we are anchored just outside of Charleston in a very narrow section of the ICW, Elliott\u2019s Cut. \u00a0\u00a0The current runs like mad through this narrow cut with currents on some points of the tide at around 4kts.\u00a0 The cruising guide suggests transiting it with the tide.\u00a0 Good thought.\u00a0 I\u2019ll keep that in mind.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of tides and currents, our lives since entering GA waters days ago have been governed by the tides.\u00a0 Actually, it\u2019s all about not running aground as there are many areas of the ICW that are very shallow due to major cuts in the Army Corps dredging budget over the last few years.<\/p>\n<p>Today, for example, here near Charleston NC, we have to stay put until we can time our transit of a particularly shallow part of the ICW to be sure that we hit it on a rising tide.\u00a0 With our draft of just under 6\u2019 we are on the upper limit of water depth, about 2&#8242; too deep at low tide, in a particularly nasty section of about 8 miles that we have to get over today. \u00a0However, with a tide range here of nearly 6&#8242; we can time our transit to get &#8220;over the humps&#8221;. \u00a0Fingers crossed&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Ever since entering GA it\u2019s been tough with so many shallow sections.\u00a0 However, with a tidal range of 7-9\u2019 it\u2019s not too difficult to make transit as long as you are willing to leave with the tide.\u00a0 Sounds easy and it is.\u00a0 However, sometimes it means that we have to wait till mid-morning to leave which severely limits the miles we can go before evening puts an end to the day. \u00a0\u00a0The worst part that we have to transit today is just north of Charleston and low tide is at 10:30 which means that we really can\u2019t leave here until shortly before that time.<\/p>\n<p>Our next stop is Georgetown SC, a spot that we have heard is quite nice and quaint.\u00a0 Given our \u201ctide inflicted\u201d late start today, I doubt that we will make it all the way there today.<\/p>\n<p>Shoaling and cold besides, we have enjoyed our run over the last few days.\u00a0 In particular, we had a nice time in Beaufort, SC where we stopped for a visit.\u00a0 We had spent time there a few years ago when we last came through and it was nice to be back.\u00a0 I wrote about that visit i<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=1136\">n this post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I won\u2019t repeat that here except to say that it\u2019s still lovely.\u00a0 While we were in town a strong front came through and dumped loads of rain. The sky looked particularly ominous as it approached.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-29-15a-003.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #444444;\">One great thing about changing weather is that it made for a great sunset just in time for cocktails.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-29-15a-004.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4309\" title=\"3-29-15a 004\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-29-15a-004.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\"
