Heading north&#8230;still."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #444444;\">It\u2019s Thursday morning and today we head out from Savannah after two days of exploring the historic district.\u00a0 Last time we visited this city we took Pandora up the river and tied up at the city dock.\u00a0 It turned out to be a \u201cnot great idea\u201d as we bucked some remarkable currents and also picked up a nasty poly tarp in our propeller along the way.\u00a0 All worked out well in the end, but it was a bit harrowing at the time.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=1141\">I wrote about that experience here.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This time, to keep things a bit less exciting, we opted to tie up at a marina in a nearby town Thunderbolt, that was named, legend has it, by native Americans for a fresh water spring that \u201csprung\u201d when it was struck by a powerful bolt of lightning, way back when. By staying here we were able to avoid the long run up the Savannah river and all that comes (see fun experience referenced above) with being in a busy shipping port.\u00a0 This is a very convenient spot and there&#8217;s even a nearby city bus to take us into the city center and to do a bit of provisioning.<\/p>\n<p>Besides, they even give you Crispy Cr\u00e8me donuts each morning, delivered to your boat.\u00a0 Believe it or not, I have NEVER had a Crispy Cr\u00e8am donut, EVER. Now I have&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, we enjoyed being in the city again and walked all over, taking in the sights. \u00a0 With the risk of repeating myself from our last visit, you might want to take a look at that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=1156\">post from a few years ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We discovered that there was a nice little maritime museum in town, the S<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shipsofthesea.org\/\">hips of the Sea Maritime Museum<\/a>.\u00a0 It\u2019s a lovely spot and as an added benefit, they even have some terrific gardens on site.\u00a0 It seems that they host events on a regular basis and what a spot it is.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-013.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4293\" title=\"3-26-15a 013\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-013.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-013.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-013-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #444444;\">You enter the main entrance to the museum through the gardens.\u00a0 It\u2019s a lovely spot and the museum is housed in an old mansion.\u00a0 Very tranquil.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-014.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4297\" title=\"3-26-15a 014\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-014.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-014.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-014-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #444444;\">While the museum is not particularly large, they have a nice collection of good sized models, the sort made for ship owners and, as you can imagine, there is a focus on Savannah history.\u00a0\u00a0 In fact, they have a LOT of models of boat named, you guessed it, SAVANNAH, including the only nuclear powered cargo ship, the&#8230; SAVANNAH.\u00a0\u00a0 It was launched during the Eisenhower administration as part of the \u201cnuclear for peace\u201d initiative.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-007.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4294\" title=\"3-26-15a 007\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-007.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-007.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-007-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>Oops, it didn\u2019t work out particularly well and the ship was soon retired as too costly to operate.\u00a0 Nice model though, even if the photo isn\u2019t so great.<\/p>\n<p>And this ship was also called&#8230;the Savannah. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4298\" title=\"3-26-15a 003\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-003.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-003.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-003-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #444444;\">The Civil War looms large as a part of the history of the area and there were some really nice models depicting ships of the period. \u00a0 This model of an ironclad was great and easily 6&#8242; long.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-005.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4299\" title=\"3-26-15a 005\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-005.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-005.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-005-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>Particularly nice detail of the engine room in a cut out area. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-006.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4300\" title=\"3-26-15a 006\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-006.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-006.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-006-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>Beyond the Savannah themed ships, there are plenty of nice pieces to admire including a good collection of scrimshaw. \u00a0What nautical museum is complete without a bunch of carved whale teeth?<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4295\" title=\"3-26-15a 010\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-010.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-010.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-010-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #444444;\">Brenda particularly liked the piece with a sheep carved on it? \u00a0Now, how often do you get to see sheep carved on whale teeth? \u00a0Perhaps only in Savannah. \u00a0Well, that&#8217;s been our experience. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-009.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4296\" title=\"3-26-15a 009\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-009.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-009.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-009-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>The gardens were a hit with Brenda who particularly enjoyed the gardens.\u00a0\u00a0 She was a good girl and even looked at the ship models.\u00a0 \u201cOh Bob, I do so love looking at ship models\u201d. \u00a0 She was a good sport.\u00a0 Me, I even went into a knitting store with her, just to prove what a good guy I am.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are some really nice gardens in the city and I think we walked through each of the dozen in the historic area&#8230;twice.\u00a0 Beautiful settings.\u00a0 I\u2019ll bet that the prices of homes around these gardens are a LOT more expensive than those in more, shall we say, \u201cpedestrian\u201d settings.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-016.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4301\" title=\"3-26-15a 016\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-016.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-016.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-016-300x66.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a>When I see folks taking each other&#8217;s pictures, I always offer to take one of them. Of course, they nearly also say &#8220;would you like me to take one of you?&#8221; \u00a0Yes, that would be lovely.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-018.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4302\" title=\"3-26-15a 018\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-018.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-018.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-018-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>There is nearly always some sort of historic ship reproduction visiting the waterfront area. \u00a0This time, the Pinta and Santa Maria, of Columbus fame. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-028.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4303\" title=\"3-26-15a 028\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-028.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-028.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-028-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>I heard that the Pinta ran aground coming into the city. \u00a0Nice to be in good company given Pandora&#8217;s track record to date of finding the shallow spots.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of experiences that, shall we say, raise one&#8217;s blood pressure. \u00a0There is always the Savannah Serenity House to help bring things back in balance. \u00a0Alas, there was no hope when we visited as even they were having a bad day. \u00a0Note the sign on the door? \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-026.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4304\" title=\"3-26-15a 026\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-026.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-026.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/3-26-15a-026-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>&#8220;Now Bob, do you have to be so insensitive?&#8221; \u00a0 Yes, you&#8217;re right.
