{"id":4052,"date":"2015-02-01T14:05:43","date_gmt":"2015-02-01T14:05:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=4052"},"modified":"2015-02-01T14:05:43","modified_gmt":"2015-02-01T14:05:43","slug":"the-land-of-the-big-boys-and-their-toys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=4052","title":{"rendered":"The land of the \u201cbig boys\u201d and their toys."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #444444;\">It\u2019s Sunday morning and we are anchored in West Palm Beach, clearly the home of some pretty big kids with all the toys that go along with being one of the .001% crowd.\u00a0 One of the best parts of being on the water is that we get the $20m view without having to pay the price.\u00a0 Alas, gone are the days of the Million Dollar View, I guess as that amount won\u2019t get you much more than a one room condo in this neighborhood with a view of a parking lot. Well, owning a boat isn\u2019t exactly cheap but compared to what the locals must be paying, we are pretty low on the totem pole and we have terrific views too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While I am certain that the local property owners would love it if we didn\u2019t anchor near them, the city and merchants clearly want us to hang out so they offer docks to tie up for a few hours and a very convenient spot to park our dink while we visit ashore. \u00a0\u00a0I even spied a spigot on the dock so perhaps I can fill up our water tanks too.<\/p>\n<p>We arrived here yesterday after our short ten mile run from North Lake Worth.\u00a0 We are still in the \u201cPalms\u201d as the local cities are known but are now anchored in a more urban environment and the view of the city it\u2019s very nice.\u00a0\u00a0 A short run to shore in our dink put us in the heart of a great shopping and dining district with a very pretty waterfront park.\u00a0 Last night we went out to a very nice Mexican restaurant for dinner.\u00a0 It was terrific.<\/p>\n<p>The main drag in town is bustling with activity.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15a-001.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4053\" title=\"2-1-15a 001\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15a-001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15a-001.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15a-001-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #444444;\">The view from the park is very pretty with a neat fountain that lights up at night along with lights on the palm trees and over the street itself.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15a-005.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4054\" title=\"2-1-15a 005\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15a-005.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15a-005.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15a-005-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #444444;\">And, as the light fades, it&#8217;s even more beautiful. \u00a0Doesn&#8217;t this make you want to whip out your AMEX? \u00a0I guess that&#8217;s the point. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15a-010.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4056\" title=\"2-1-15a 010\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15a-010.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>I have to say that the view of the city after dark from the harbor is quite impressive.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15a-017.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4055\" title=\"2-1-15a 017\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15a-017.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15a-017.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15a-017-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #444444;\">As we made our way south yesterday we passed the <a href=\"www.rybovich.com\/\">Rybovich yard<\/a>, known for their work in refitting megayachts. \u00a0It seems that this yard does more projects than any other in the US each year. \u00a0And, if the number of huge yachts at their docks is any indication of how business is, then they must be swimming in work.\u00a0 This is clearly a spot for the \u201cbig boys to keep their toys\u201d with slip after slip filled with one yacht bigger than the next.\u00a0 If yachts are the ultimate status symbol, then these babies are making that point loud and clear.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15b-008.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4057\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15b-008.jpg\" particularly struck with this racing yacht R88.\u00a0 I have seen photos of this yacht, the newest Rambler.\u00a0 It was just launched by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neboatworks.com\/news54.php\">New England Boat Works<\/a> in late 2014.\u00a0 It\u2019s a very hot boat and will certainly be sailing around the world and do all of the major ocean races.\u00a0 \u00a0When it comes to toys of the \u201cmegawealthy\u201d, no make that the \u201cgigawealthy\u201d, this boat is a the top of the heap.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15b-004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4058\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15b-004.jpg\" gigawealthy want to take their yachts to Europe or perhaps further, they (their yachts that is) are hoisted aboard a ship like this and off they go. \u00a0\u00a0Notice the yacht tender on dock to the right, all packed in a cradle waiting to be shipped.\u00a0 Or, perhaps it just arrived.\u00a0 Who knows?\u00a0 I wonder what the \u201cmother ship\u201d for that little number looks like.\u00a0<a dollars to burn.\u00a0\u00a0 And, in that case, The Palms are on fire. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Today we hope to feel a little of that heat by going over to the iconic resort <a href=\"www.thebreakers.com\">The Breakers<\/a>, to have a cup of coffee and do some people watching. \u00a0The <a href=\"www.thebreakers.com\/about_the_breakers\/history\/\">history of the hotel<\/a> is really the history of Florida tourism. \u00a0The last time Brenda and I were there was years ago in a different life with someone else paying the bill.\u00a0 At that time we stayed several days for a nice visit but now, on our own dime it will just be coffee or tea. \u00a0 It&#8217;s a beautiful building.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/2-1-15b-015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4060\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL up with those .001% folks just fine.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0My mother used to tell me that the rich were miserable however, looking around Palm Beach is making me wonder.\u00a0 Well, one can only hope, can\u2019t one?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>OK, OK, perhaps I have overdone the &#8220;sunrise thing&#8221; of late. \u00a0However, a nice one today. \u00a0<a
