{"id":3619,"date":"2014-10-23T17:04:44","date_gmt":"2014-10-23T17:04:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=3619"},"modified":"2014-10-23T17:04:44","modified_gmt":"2014-10-23T17:04:44","slug":"nazare-boats-and-some-beach-time-sort-of","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=3619","title":{"rendered":"Nazare, boats and some beach time, sort of."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Thursday afternoon and we just got back from a day trip up the coast and back. \u00a0We are staying very close to Nazare, a small resort town and fishing village. \u00a0As is the case up and down the Portuguese coast, there are very few protected harbors. \u00a0In Nazare, they have carved out a very well protected little harbor inside of two gigantic breakwaters. \u00a0 Inside is an interesting mix of commercial fishing craft and some sailing and power yachts.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the boats in the harbor were less than 40&#8242; and it was pretty clear where the pleasure boats and working craft were located. \u00a0Not together, as by and large, they didn&#8217;t mix. \u00a0I guess that the &#8220;yacht set&#8221; didn&#8217;t want to smell fish.<\/p>\n<p>Me, I was drawn to the fishing boats and enjoyed seeing the many colorful boats. \u00a0Anyway, the other one has fish, or should I say fishes?<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-23-14a-010.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3622\" title=\"10-23-14a 010\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-23-14a-010.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-23-14a-010.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-23-14a-010-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 14px;\">Nazare has several miles of wide beaches and along the way were large racks of split fish drying in the sun. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-23-14a-005.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3623\" title=\"10-23-14a 005\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-23-14a-005.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-23-14a-005.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-23-14a-005-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 14px;\">Tasty yes? \u00a0Oh well, I give up. \u00a0They looked big to me at least&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>So, after that, we headed up the coast a bit further to have a late lunch. \u00a0We&#8217;d have eaten earlier but we weren&#8217;t able to find the place suggested as we blew by the &#8220;exit&#8221; on the coastal road. Anyway, we finally found it. \u00a0This beach was several miles long and nearly deserted. \u00a0We were told that, in the summer, it is mobbed. \u00a0 The waves were huge here too. \u00a0Quite a few surfers.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-23-14a-018.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3628\" title=\"10-23-14a 018\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-23-14a-018.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-23-14a-018.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-23-14a-018-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 14px;\">Interestingly, we drove along the coast through mile after mile of pine trees in what looked like a huge managed pine farm. \u00a0Nearly every tree for miles had these cuts in the bark to collect pine sap. \u00a0I wonder what this is used for. \u00a0You&#8217;d think that the process of cutting such a big slab of bark out would kill the trees, but it doesn&#8217;t. \u00a0 We saw trees where the bark had grown back over the old scar.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-23-14a-011.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3629\" title=\"10-23-14a 011\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-23-14a-011.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-23-14a-011.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-23-14a-011-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>We did spend some time on the beach, no make that looking at the beach. \u00a0No swimming in monster waves for us chickens. \u00a0Besides, we are told that the water is always cold. \u00a0No, I&#8217;ll have an ice cream. \u00a0Brenda and I are happy to watch others in the cold surf. \u00a0Besides, it is nearly November.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 14px;\">Perhaps I should wrap this up for now and start to think about dinner. \u00a0 I know, I&#8217;ll go wake up Brenda from her nap. \u00a0Yes, good idea. \u00a0Tonight we are going to head into the village for dinner at a place where locals eat. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 14px;\">We got a bottle of wine at the the grocery and were stunned, as always, by how low the prices were. \u00a0There wasn&#8217;t a bottle in the place for more than six Euro. The best bottle of port was only 7.5 Euro. \u00a0No wonder many places have a sign that says &#8220;a meal without wine is breakfast&#8221;. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I guess that we&#8217;ll share some wine to regain our strength after a hard day of almost going onto a beach before dinner. \u00a0Indeed&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Thursday
