{"id":3600,"date":"2014-10-22T16:24:57","date_gmt":"2014-10-22T16:24:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=3600"},"modified":"2014-10-22T17:48:19","modified_gmt":"2014-10-22T17:48:19","slug":"a-drive-in-the-country-through-hundreds-of-roundabouts-to-nazare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=3600","title":{"rendered":"A drive in the country through hundreds of roundabouts to Nazare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Wednesday afternoon and we have just arrived at Quinta do Campo, a lovely Inn near the seaside resort of Nazare. \u00a0The owner met us at the door and gave a breathless description of the 900 year old estate. \u00a0It seems that this was at one time a monastery serving a local castle and has been in his family for hundreds of years. \u00a0Anyway, they now have turned it into a B&amp;B and they also do a lot of meetings and weddings. \u00a0It&#8217;s an amazing place. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.granjadovallado.com\/pt\">Check out their site for a video of it&#8217;s history<\/a>. \u00a0I hope that you speak Portuguese. \u00a0If you don&#8217;t, there are words to follow and it&#8217;s quite interesting.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll be here for a few days and then will continue north. \u00a0Our plan is to book each location a few days prior to arriving so we can be flexible on our itinerary and adjust as we go. \u00a0This approach is taking a bit of getting used to for Brenda who gets a wild look in her eye as soon as we are within a few nights of being homeless. \u00a0I expect that she will begin exhibiting symptoms beginning Thursday morning but I am sure she will find something really great for our next stop.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 14px;\">Today we drove from Sintra up here via mainly local roads and that involved many, many roundabouts that everyone takes at breakneck speeds. \u00a0Along the way we spotted a lovely area to pull off and enjoy the view of the rolling countryside. \u00a0What a view. \u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-030.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3610\" title=\"10-22-14a 030\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-030.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-030.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-030-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>Then, we noticed this funky food truck. \u00a0Inside was a commercial bread mixer humming away and two women turning out hundreds of wonderful smelling fresh baked breads and treats. \u00a0It turns out it is a coal fired mobile bakery and we bought a fabulous baked ham and cheese sandwich fresh baked roll.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-032.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3609\" title=\"10-22-14a 032\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-032.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-032.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-032-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a> \u00a0We wanted to see some of the coastal areas on our way north so we took some local roads, sans GPS and decided to visit a lovely fishing village, Ericeira. \u00a0The town is on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic and there isn&#8217;t a harbor, just an enormous breakwater that juts out into the ocean. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-036.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3601\" title=\"10-22-14a 036\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-036.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-036.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-036-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>The view of the &#8220;harbor&#8221; is beautiful. \u00a0However, &#8220;harbor&#8221; isn&#8217;t really a fair description as there were 4-6&#8242; waves crashing up on the beach in the harbor itself. \u00a0This place makes the open harbors of the Bahamas look like a lake. \u00a0And, today was a calm day. \u00a0This is a real working fishing village with lots of traditional and modern small fishing boats. \u00a0The harbor is under a massive cliff reinforced with concrete. \u00a0 This part was a sort of rugged park area.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-037.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3602\" title=\"10-22-14a 037\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-037.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-037.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-037-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>I walked out on the breakwater and took a panorama to give you an idea of what it looks like. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-050.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3604\" title=\"10-22-14a 050\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-050-1024x220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"107\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-050-1024x220.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-050-300x64.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-050.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>The breakwater was made up of hundreds of enormous &#8220;jack&#8221; shaped cement forms, stacked up on one another. \u00a0This photo shows how big they are. \u00a0No this isn&#8217;t an illusion. \u00a0They are huge, tens of tons each. \u00a0Amazingly, many were broken from wave action. \u00a0Imagine what sorts of waves would break something like this.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-052.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3613\" title=\"10-22-14a 052\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-052.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-052.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-052-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>The waves were crashing up everywhere. \u00a0I can only imagine what a winter storm must look like. To the right was a boat ramp where boats were attached to a tractor and dragged up a concrete ramp. \u00a0Timing things right was a team effort.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-053.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3603\" title=\"10-22-14a 053\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-053.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-053.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-053-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>The older boats have iron skids on the keel and bilges so that they can slide right up on the ramp. \u00a0For the newer boats, made from fiberglass, they are lowered into the water from a crane. \u00a0All boats are taken out of the water immediately upon entering the harbor. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-049.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3605\" title=\"10-22-14a 049\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-049.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-049.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-049-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>The &#8220;boatyard&#8221; was jammed with all manner of craft.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-047.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3611\" title=\"10-22-14a 047\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-047.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-047.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-047-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>Some were very colorful. \u00a0Notice the hard chine with the iron shoe to skid along the cement when the tractor is pulling them too and from the water.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-045.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3612\" title=\"10-22-14a 045\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-045.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-045.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-045-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>Along with the boats were huge amounts of fishing &#8220;stuff&#8221;. \u00a0I was particularly taken by this pile of ceramic jugs. \u00a0They are used to fish for octopus. These are left in the water for a period until a local octopus takes up residence. \u00a0Then they pull the jugs up and, what do you know, octopus for dinner.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-043.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3614\" title=\"10-22-14a 043\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-043.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-043.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/10-22-14a-043-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 14px;\">It was great fun to travel up the coast today and see the sights. \u00a0Tonight we&#8217;ll head somewhere local for dinner. \u00a0We&#8217;ll be here for a few days and then we&#8217;ll head up toward Porto, home of the famous wine by the same name.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Along the way&#8230; roundabouts at breakneck speed. \u00a0I am actually getting used to that and Brenda, hands over her eyes, is too.
