I\u2019s Monday here in Newport and we are enjoying a peaceful morning aboard Pandora.\u00a0 The harbor is already busy with the constant coming and going of small craft as they ply the harbor buzzing from here to there.\u00a0 The ever present harbor patrol just passed looking official with his black and aluminum inflatable.\u00a0\u00a0 With this many boats I expect that absent the harbormaster things would be pretty chaotic.\u00a0 Today he\u2019s towing a large log around behind his boat.\u00a0 Better to get it out of the water than to be hit by some unsuspecting powerboat.\u00a0 Yesterday he and one of his other \u201cofficial\u201d friends came to the rescue of two boats that had tangled their anchors near us, a common theme in this busy harbor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Brenda and I had out own \u201cpatrol\u201d last evening as we took a \u201ccocktail cruise\u201d on our way to dinner at a nice little Italian spot downtown. For nearly an hour we slowly \u201cputted\u201d around enjoying the sights, and plenty of sights there were.<\/p>\n

There is a marina in the harbor that caters to the \u201csuperyachts\u201d and there are plenty in attendance.\u00a0 To us it looked like business is very good as there wasn’t a single open slip in the place.\u00a0 And, there were plenty to compete for the title of \u201cmy yacht is bigger and more opulent than yours\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 This one actually had a sign on it with the details.\u00a0 She\u2019s 90\u2019 long and was just launched in 2013.\u00a0 How about that for a varnish job?\"\"<\/a>This gives a good feel for how massive these yachts are.\u00a0 Plenty of room for \u201ctoys\u201d inside of the stern of this baby.\"\"<\/a><\/span>If you are into speed and multi-hulls, this should tickle your fancy.\u00a0 Hard to say how long she is but the mast is tall enough to trigger a nose bleed.\u00a0 I\u2019ll bet she rips along.\"\"<\/a><\/span>This view gives a feel for the variety.\u00a0 How about this for a \u201cclipper bow\u201d?\u00a0 And a great contrast to the motor yachts beside her.\"\"<\/a>\"\"<\/a><\/span>I was particularly struck by the contrast between this traditional sailing yacht on a mooring out in the harbor and her \u201cmate\u201d a ultra-modern go-fast racer.\u00a0 It\u2019s not uncommon to see two yachts rafted together.\u00a0 Often it\u2019s a huge motoryacht and a racing sailboat.\u00a0 \u201cheavens Roy, you can\u2019t expect me to sleep aboard that little sailboat.\u00a0 She can\u2019t be an inch over\u00a0 50\u2019.\u00a0 Reeaally!!!\u201d \u00a0It seems that there is a trend among the “uberwealthy” to have multiple yachts. \u00a0But of course, Buffy wouldn’t have it any other way.\"\"<\/a><\/span>\"\"<\/a>Newport is also the home of IYRS, the International Yacht Restoration School<\/a>.\u00a0 IYRS takes students who want to learn yacht restoration and teaches them the skills to work on old classics.\u00a0 It\u2019s a terrific program and has turned out some great graduates that now work on some of the most iconic yachts.\u00a0 In particular, Coronet, the last surviving yachts from the Victorian era is undergoing restoration.\u00a0 She is being bankrolled by a wealthy benefactor who is footing the bill on this massive undertaking.\u00a0 Coronet is over 100 years old and has been around the world several times.\u00a0 She is 130\u2019 long and just massive. This photo is of a poster depicting her in all her glory.\u00a0 Quite a sight.\"\"<\/a><\/span>Her interior was painstakingly removed years ago when she arrived here and is in storage.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The plan is to restore the hull and then put all the interior pieces back in place.\u00a0 It is a massively expensive undertaking and it\u2019s hard to imagine how one person can fund such a restoration.\u00a0\u00a0 It will be years until she is back in the water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Look at the massive timbers.\u00a0 They are about 10\u201d each.\u00a0\"\"<\/a>The stern is lovely and a LOT bigger than it looks here.\u00a0\"\"<\/a><\/span>For those with pockets that, you might say are \u201cshallower\u201d, IYRS also restores Beetle Cats, the iconic catboats loved by many.\u00a0\u00a0 They always have a few for sale.\u00a0 The deal is that you can donate your old boat and then buy it back after it\u2019s restored by the students. \u00a0 They look great.\"\"<\/a><\/span>They even have a good supply of boats that have been donated and are ready for a willing buyer to foot the cash for a rebuild.\u00a0 A very appealing concept, in my book.\u00a0 Hmm\u2026 pick one. \u00a0It’s just sooooo hard to choose…\"\"<\/a><\/span>Anyway, thinking about wooden boats isn\u2019t getting our day underway.\u00a0 Perhaps we\u2019ll take a tour of an equally unattainable restored mansion.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0As the NY Lottery once said, \u201call you need is a dollar and a dream\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 Perhaps a few dozen million lottery tickets is more like it.<\/span><\/p>\n
