{"id":3038,"date":"2014-04-25T19:24:10","date_gmt":"2014-04-25T19:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=3038"},"modified":"2014-04-25T19:38:49","modified_gmt":"2014-04-25T19:38:49","slug":"wheeling-about-eleuthera","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=3038","title":{"rendered":"Wheeling about Eleuthera"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #444444;\">It\u2019s Friday and we are back in Staniel Cay, again. \u00a0 Saturday, tomorrow, we will be joined here by our son Rob and his girlfriend Kandice who will be aboard for a week on our run up the Exuma chain and back to Nassau. \u00a0And that will be my last stop in the Bahamas where Brenda will fly home and I&#8217;ll meet up with crew for my run back home to CT. \u00a0 While I hate to see this season in the Bahamas end, I am really looking forward to being in New England for the summer, even if I do have to cut my lawn. \u00a0I guess it&#8217;s like the rest of life, you take the good with the bad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday we had a wonderful 40 mile sail from Eleuthera on calm seas with a nice moderate wind. \u00a0Along the way we did a bit of fishing and caught a mahi-mahi. \u00a0Actually, it wasn&#8217;t just a mahi-mahi, it was a big mahi-mahi, almost too big to get aboard. \u00a0 Here&#8217;s how it looked in the water. \u00a0Yes, the water is really that blue. \u00a0Mahi-mahi are very colorful when they are &#8220;pissed&#8221; and he was plenty upset, as you can imagine.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-123.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3049\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-123.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-123.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-123-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #444444;\">And as we got it closer. \u00a0I feared that this would be as close as we&#8217;d get prior to loosing him.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-135.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3050\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-135.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-135.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-135-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #444444;\">Happily, we landed him. \u00a0Brenda holding the pole and me with the gaff. \u00a0 Now, that&#8217;s a big fish. \u00a0Then I cleaned him in the cockpit. \u00a0(Brenda went below to avoid the gore and, let me tell you, there was plenty.) \u00a0Good thing we have a watermaker as I used lots cleaning up the mess with red blood flowing off of the back of the boat. \u00a0I wonder if we were being followed by sharks? \u00a0Bottom line, nearly 10 lbs of filets. \u00a0 No more fishing for a while, that&#8217;s for sure.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-164.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3051\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-164.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-164.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-164-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #444444;\">Speaking of the &#8220;one that got away&#8221;. \u00a0 We also passed a pod of pilot whales, the first we have seen. \u00a0Unfortunately, I wasn&#8217;t quite ready with my camera so this shot isn&#8217;t so great. \u00a0 Actually, it&#8217;s pretty pathetic. \u00a0You will have to trust me that they were whales. \u00a0For the &#8220;camera isn&#8217;t ready part&#8221; they were very close. \u00a0I think that they were napping, actually. \u00a0As Pandora passed, they woke up pronto and dove. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-170.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3052\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-170-1024x652.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-170-1024x652.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-170-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>While we were in Eleuthera we did some exploring by car. \u00a0(forgive the jarring segue) Car rentals in the Bahamas are a very different experience than in the States where you have to sign your life away before they let you behind the wheel.\u00a0 In the Bahamas, \u00a0well, &#8220;it&#8217;s the Bahamas mon, don&#8217;t worry&#8221;. \u00a0Indeed. Actually, it\u2019s as simple as handing them the cash for the rental and driving away.\u00a0 No walk around to check with dents before or after, (there\u2019s too many to count anyway) or any discussion about a security deposit. \u00a0 Security deposit? \u00a0What&#8217;s that? \u00a0I guess that there&#8217;s not much of a risk of someone taking off with one of their cars. \u00a0 Wait, there&#8217;s nowhere to run with the stolen car on an island with only one major road, right? \u00a0 Alas, I digress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Eleuthera is a long, very narrow, island, 100 miles by only 3 miles at it\u2019s widest.\u00a0 At the narrowest; well it&#8217;s very narrow, only as wide as a single lane road, barely. \u00a0 The island is a bit more lush than other islands that we have visited but it\u2019s still pretty arid.\u00a0 Interestingly, Dole fruit used to grow pineapples on the island but some time ago they moved their farming to Hawaii.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to believe that they were ever able to grow pineapples on the island given the modest rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>The northern part of the island is pretty hilly by Bahamas standards, but that distinction is still relative as the highest point on the island is still less than 200\u2019.\u00a0\u00a0 That\u2019s in great contrast to the Caribbean where islands rise several thousand feet above sea level. (I thought I&#8217;d throw that reference in as we are thinking of taking Pandora there for the winter of 2014\/2015. \u00a0However, that&#8217;s a story for another post so I&#8217;ll let it go at that for now.)<\/p>\n<p>As I mentioned, the narrowest point of the island is only a single car lane wide bridge.\u00a0 That particular spot is called \u201cthe glass window\u201d as it\u2019s where you can see from the eastern side of the island to the western side.\u00a0 And there is a HUGE difference depending on which way you look. \u00a0The view of the western side is shallow flats, typical of the Bahamas. \u00a0 I understand that during a storm a few years ago this bridge was hit by a giant wave that pushed the entire bridge over some eleven feet. \u00a0I shudder to think of what that wave must have looked like. I am glad that I wasn&#8217;t there. \u00a0Even on a &#8220;calm&#8221; day, the waves are plenty big for me.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-010.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3039\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-010.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-010.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-010-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #444444;\">The eastern side is very rugged with huge ocean waves crashing.\u00a0 When I see a coastline like this I can\u2019t help but think about what it would be like to be shipwrecked here. \u00a0No, I won&#8217;t think about that today&#8230;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-014a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3040\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-014a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-014a.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-014a-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #444444;\">I walked up to the top of one of the cliffs and saw about a dozen sea turtles swimming below, way below, actually. \u00a0I had a tough time looking over the cliff with the waves crashing hard way below. \u00a0I&#8217;m not a fan of heights at all. \u00a0The turtles were each between two and three feet across. \u00a0Very beautiful. \u00a0 Yes, this picture is pretty fuzzy but I figured that a bad photo of a turtle is better than no photo. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-018.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3042\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-018-1024x776.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-018-1024x776.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-018-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-018.jpg 1973w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #444444;\">We also visited a nearby cove called \u201cThe Queen\u2019s bath\u201d.\u00a0 Somehow, I\u2019m not picturing good old Queen Elizabeth splashing around here in her knickers.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The waves (on a calm day) looked to be pretty spirited for the old gal.\u00a0 \u201cCome on in Liz, the water\u2019s great\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Can you get struck by lightning for taking the Queen\u2019s name in vane?\u00a0 No wait, the Bahamas declared their independence from England a while back so I\u2019m safe, I guess.\u00a0 A beautiful spot, Queen or not. \u00a0And yes, that&#8217;s Brenda and Maureen on the side of the cliff. \u00a0&#8220;Don&#8217;t jump&#8230;Someone call the crisis hotline!&#8221; \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-065.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3043\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-065.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-065.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/4-25-14a-065-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #444444;\">We stopped at a lovely spot for lunch.
