Can you say \u201copen the bridge?\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 14px;\">It\u2019s hard to believe that it\u2019s possible to pass through 40 miles of water and have to go through over 20 bridges, and to do all of that in one day.\u00a0 As Iwrite this it\u2019s Tuesday evening and while it\u2019s not even 9:00, Brenda\u2019s snoozing. \u00a0It may seem odd to you but motoring along all day and constantly having to adjust the speed of Pandora to arrive at a given bridge in time for them to open, is very tiring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In this part of Florida, the bridges are very close together and all are too low for Pandora with her 65\u2019 tall mast, to get under. \u00a0 As a result, we have to time our approach to each bridge so that we arrive at the appointed opening time.\u00a0 Some only open up once per hour, some each half hour and some on the quarter hour.\u00a0 The problem is that there is barely enough time to get from one to the next in the time alowed.\u00a0 Pandora\u2019s comfortable cruising speed is about\u00a0 7 knots, about the equivalent of 7.7 MPH.\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t very fast but typical for a boat such as ours. \u00a0 This is a picture of one of the better looking bridges. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-021.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2705\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-021.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-021.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-021-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 14px;\">The bridge operators are plenty friendly but they won\u2019t stray from their appointed schedule by much more than a minute and, if you are even two minutes late, you will have to wait till the next opening which will be at least 30 minutes later.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t sound like much but you can loose hours in a day and spend a lot of time circling in the water with the boat while waiting for the next opening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Happily, we timed most of our bridges pretty well and made it all the way to Ft. Lauderdale where we are now in a day.\u00a0 40 miles doesn&#8217;t sound like much but when you combine that with so many bridges, it\u2019s a long way and plenty of tiring as we had to be \u201con\u201d every minute.<\/p>\n<p>Enough about the difficulties of bridges.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0At least it\u2019s not snowing.\u00a0 Did I mention that it was in the 80s and sunny?\u00a0 I probably shouldn&#8217;t have.<\/p>\n<p>This is the view that greeted me today when the sun rose.\u00a0 Pretty nice.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-003.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2706\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-003.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-003.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-003-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">As we passed along the waterway, we spied an endless number of\u00a0<\/span>magnificent<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0yachts.\u00a0 I feel\u00a0pretty good about Pandora but she\u2019s a canoe compared to these babies.\u00a0\u00a0 This one is classified as an \u201cexpedition yacht\u201d which means that she can go about anywhere in the world.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-011.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2707\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-011.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-011.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-011-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>Some of these yachts even have their own submarines aboard.\u00a0 We even saw one with a helicopter perched on the back deck.\u00a0 Hard to believe that one person owns these.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This beautiful yacht is more for coastal cruising as opposed to ocean crossing. \u00a0I also saw this one in Newport RI a few years ago. \u00a0She really gets around.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-012.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2708\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-012.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-012.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-012-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">This sailboat, Rambler, is quite famous on the ocean racing circuit.\u00a0 She wins many races\u00a0 and has competed in some of the world\u2019s most difficult events.\u00a0 In the &#8220;Fastnet&#8221; race off of England, a few years ago, she her keel fell off and she turned over in the water instantly.\u00a0Pretty amazing boat though.\u00a0 She\u2019s about 100\u2019 long. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-006.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2709\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-006.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-006.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-006-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a>The keel is a massive lead part under the boat that helps balance the boat and provide resistance to the wind in the sails.\u00a0 Without it, any sailboat will turn turtle right away.\u00a0 Pandora weighs about 25,000 pounds and nearly 10,000 pounds of the weight is in the lead keel. Fortunately, when Rambler turned over she\u00a0<\/span>didn&#8217;t<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0sink and was salvaged so she could race again.\u00a0 Also, thankfully, none of the crew was\u00a0hurt.\u00a0 The odds of a keel falling off are very slim and thankfully, no boat like Pandora has ever lost a keel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 14px;\">Along the waterway we passed one amazing home after another.\u00a0 Some tacky and some grand but all really expensive.\u00a0\u00a0 I wonder what folks to do earn that much money. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is a typical home and we saw plenty.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2710\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-015.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-015.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-015-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">This one was\u00a0<\/span>particularly<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0impressive.\u00a0 Quite modern.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2711\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-022.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-022.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-022-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 14px;\">This earth mover was toiling away on a little sand island.\u00a0 I have no idea how they got it out there as it was perched on the mound and yet there was no way to get to shore without going in the water.\u00a0 I doubt that they float well.\u00a0 I guess he will have to pile up sand to make his own island all the way to shore.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2712\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-014.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-014.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-014-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">With all the sunshine here in Florida, you&#8217;d expect to see solar panels. \u00a0 We didn&#8217;t really see any but did see these wind generators or mills on the top of an apartment tower. \u00a0They look pretty wacky but were churning away making electricity. \u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 14px;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2713\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-024.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2-4-14-024-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">Pandora doesn&#8217;t have a wind generator but she does have large solar panels that supply all of her\u00a0electrical\u00a0needs when we are at anchor. \u00a0 The panels put out enough power each day to run our refrigerator, freezer, computers etc along with enough left over to power our\u00a0desalination unit\u00a0which makes fresh water from salt water. \u00a0In the Bahamas, fresh water is very precious and if you don&#8217;t have your own desalinization equipment you have to purchase water for about $.50 a gallon. That may sound like a lot for water but believe me, it&#8217;s a lot cheaper than making your own as the equipment is very expensive. \u00a0However, cost aside, having enough fresh water is worth most anything to Brenda who loves here daily shower. \u00a0And remember, keeping Brenda happy is job one. \u00a0As they say &#8220;a happy wife makes for a happy ship&#8221;. \u00a0Works for me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">We are now anchored in a small harbor in Ft Lauderdale and tomorrow we will head out for some last minute shopping as it looks like we will be able to head over to the Bahamas on Thursday.\u00a0\u00a0 The wind will likely be light so it will be a motorboat ride.\u00a0 That\u2019s fine as Brenda prefers that to more exciting sailing.\u00a0 We will likely make Bimini our first stop.\u00a0 Bimini became famous as the winter home of Ernest Hemingway.\u00a0\u00a0 I guess they still have plenty of rum there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Well, I had better wrap this up and get to bed myself as after going through 21 bridges today I am ready for 20 winks and now&#8217;s a good time for that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s
