{"id":2220,"date":"2013-07-15T12:30:53","date_gmt":"2013-07-15T12:30:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=2220"},"modified":"2013-07-15T13:00:50","modified_gmt":"2013-07-15T13:00:50","slug":"classic-wooden-boats-in-essex-bringing-balance-to-work-on-pandora","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=2220","title":{"rendered":"Classic wooden boats in Essex bringing balance to work on Pandora."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s just great to live in an area that is so focused on the water. \u00a0After being far from the water for so many years, when we lived in NJ, it&#8217;s just so much more fun to be less than a mile from the water now. \u00a0With all of the risks of living on the water, I personally like to be &#8220;near&#8221; verses &#8220;on&#8221; the wet stuff, with our land home, that is. \u00a0For Pandora, being &#8220;on&#8221; is definitely better. \u00a0Unfortunately, she remains high and dry as I finish up projects including sanding and scraping off all of the paint on her bottom.<\/p>\n<p>Working on her has been a challenge with the 90 degree heat that we have had over the last few weeks and early morning visits to the boat yard, when it is cool, is the only way for folks like me with our &#8220;delicate&#8221; constitution, to get anything done without wasting away. \u00a0 Being under the Pandora with my respirator and hearing protection while sanding away with the sander and vacuum blaring away is not fun at all and especially so when the sun is higher and heat is really up. \u00a0 \u00a0It&#8217;s hard work but to pay the yard $98 per hour to do this, hour after hour, doesn&#8217;t seem to be sound fiscal planning, in my book. \u00a0So, sand away I will.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s about 6-8 hours of progress. \u00a0Pretty depressing with only about 1\/4 of the boat done. \u00a0It looks like more but don&#8217;t forget that the bottom is very narrow at the bow, and shallow. \u00a0The best is still to come. The good news is that the other side is done to the same degree. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 14px;\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-009.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2221\" title=\"7-15-13 009\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-009.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-009.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-009-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>The reason I am taking off all of the paint is that I plan on changing bottom paints and going with a combination of hard and ablative paints. \u00a0I won&#8217;t bore you with the details but it is sufficient to report that sanding is the pits and has to be done.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While I am at it, why not post a photo of the damage done to the front of the keel by that rock I tangled with a year ago May. \u00a0Pretty nasty. \u00a0I am impressed with the strength of the boat as I hit pretty hard and only have this &#8220;little&#8221; dent to show for it. \u00a0No damage to the hull at all. \u00a0That&#8217;s good, very good. After months of looking at this dent underwater when I was cleaning the hull or was just swimming around, it&#8217;s good to see it for real. \u00a0And, don&#8217;t forget that everything looks larger underwater. Imagine how nasty, and big, this dent looked <span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 14px;\">when Pandora was in the water. \u00a0It was pretty alarming, trust me on that. \u00a0 However, it&#8217;s nothing that a bit of epoxy putty won&#8217;t make right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-005.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2222\" title=\"7-15-13 005\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-005.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-005.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-005-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">So, what&#8217;s a boat husband to do when it&#8217;s too hot out to sand the bottom? \u00a0Look at boats, of course!!! Yes, the perfect diversion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend there was a rendezvous of classic mahogany powerboats at the CT River Museum. \u00a0It was great fun to take a look at all the varnish and perfect finishes on display. \u00a0The group putting on the event call themselves &#8220;Mahogany Memories&#8221;, a chapter of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acbs.org\/\">Antique and Classic Boat Society<\/a>. \u00a0This was just one of the many events that the group puts on each year.<\/p>\n<p>I always enjoy looking at beautiful woodworking and what better things to make from wood than boats? \u00a0 Here are a few of the boats on display. \u00a0Amazing stuff.<\/p>\n<p>It seemed that there was varnished mahogany everywhere. \u00a0This one was one of the few boats that were actually new. \u00a0Beautiful!<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-054.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2223\" title=\"7-15-13 054\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-054.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-054.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-054-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>Some were much older but look new, like this lovely Garwood.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-0551.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2225\" title=\"7-15-13 055\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-0551.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-0551.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-0551-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>All weren&#8217;t varnished. \u00a0I understand that this one was painted black when it was built, years ago, and is the only Garwood that was ever painted this color. \u00a0I guess if Darth Vador had a nice runabout, it would look like this. \u00a0&#8220;Luke, I am your father&#8230;Want to go for a ride?&#8230;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-061.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2226\" title=\"7-15-13 061\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-061.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-061.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-061-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>While most of the boats on display were of the &#8220;go fast&#8221; persuasion, this lovely was clearly not in a hurry. I could just imagine the captain sitting in the cockpit sporting a straw boater. \u00a0Very classy. \u00a0&#8220;I&#8217;ll take another G&amp;T please&#8221;.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-058.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2227\" title=\"7-15-13 058\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-058.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-058.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-058-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>Her beam is very narrow. \u00a0It doesn&#8217;t take a lot of HP to move her along, I am sure.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-060.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2228\" title=\"7-15-13 060\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-060.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-060.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-060-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>Perhaps my favorite boat of all was this sweet Old Town Canoe with her 1 1\/2 HP inboard. \u00a0The owner told me that this was a popular option way back when and some years they sold upwards of 100,000 of these power conversion kits. \u00a0Actually, the motor, a two stroke, was the same engine as the outboard from Evinrude, but turned on it&#8217;s side. Note the pull cord on the flywheel to start it. \u00a0See the resemblance to an outboard?Pretty slick.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-065.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2229\" title=\"7-15-13 065\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-065.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-065.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-065-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>What a great little motor. \u00a0Amazing how nice plain old bronze and brass fittings look when they are polished up and shiny.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-066.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2230\" title=\"7-15-13 066\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-066.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-066.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-066-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>Love the brass rudder and prop. \u00a0 I just love, love, love it. \u00a0 And, a wonderful paint job complete with a gold leaf stripe between the light and dark green on the hull.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-067.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2231\" title=\"7-15-13 067\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-067.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-067.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-067-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>Not all of the boats were &#8220;big&#8221;. \u00a0How about this little remote controlled tug? Wouldn&#8217;t this look great on a shelf in our home? \u00a0Yes, I want one. \u00a0 It would be a pretty big shelf as the model is nearly 4&#8242; long. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-069.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2232\" title=\"7-15-13 069\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-069.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-069.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/7-15-13-069-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>So, that&#8217;s a good example of what I am up to when I am not sanding away on Pandora. \u00a0I prefer strolling around the waterfront looking at boats verses holding a buzzing sander&#8230;
