Form follow function."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was thrilled that the Naval Academy brought five of their 44s to Essex Yacht Club for the weekend. \u00a0It seems that they were on a training voyage, perhaps a &#8220;field trip&#8221; up the coast from Annapolis. \u00a0These rugged 44&#8242; sail training boats are part of a fleet of a dozen vessels that they use for cadet training. \u00a0These are busy vessels, spending some 240 days a year on the water.<\/p>\n<p>In an age when designers go out of their way to make boats more comfortable and easy to manage, the 44s are designed to be spartan and labor intensive. \u00a0 Carrying a crew of ten, nearly all amenities are absent from these boats. \u00a0 While <em>Pandora<\/em> is only one foot shorter, she is set up with all sorts of labor saving equipment including auto pilot, roller furling headsails, watermaker and microwave. \u00a0 On the 44s, nada on all counts.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 14px;\">The designer, &#8216;David Pedrick of Pedrick Designs, who have designed winning boats over the years including two successful America&#8217;s Cup boats, working with a team from The Naval Academy in Annapolis, went out of his way to make these boats true to their Luder designed predecessors, as simple and tough as possible. \u00a0The design goals were described in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bwsailing.com\/Boat_Reviews\/Archives\/BWS_Navy44_March2005.html\">article in Blue Water Sailing Magazine<\/a>. \u00a0The dozen boats were built in Maine at Morris Yachts, known for their beautifully appointed yachts. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 14px;\">While these boats are rugged and simple, they are deliberately designed to be labor intensive to sail as they sport a crew of ten with plenty of bodies to keep them moving. \u00a0Interestingly, with a relatively short waterline relative to their length, they went with a design that isn&#8217;t particularly current. \u00a0It would be very easy to believe that these boats were designed twenty or more years ago. \u00a0However, under the skin, these boats are plenty modern with the latest high tech materials. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 14px;\">These shots certainly show the dramatic difference between the 44s and the SAGA 43. \u00a0<\/span>Not a lot of teak on deck on either design. \u00a0 That&#8217;s good.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/6-17-13a-069.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2188\" title=\"6-17-13a 069\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/6-17-13a-069.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/6-17-13a-069.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/6-17-13a-069-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nOops, missing the dodger and bimini too. The 44s have great lee cloths. The crew certainly won&#8217;t fall out of their bunks under way. \u00a0Notice the elaborate lee cloth system, including an aluminum pole, with block and tackle. \u00a0I believe that the lower bunk can even be hoisted to make it level on the weather side. \u00a0Pretty nifty. \u00a0Not great for lounging about off watch however.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">\u00a0 \u00a0I am told that they use a two watch system with five below and the rest on deck. \u00a0 Nobody will get lonely on board a 44. \u00a0Pandora feels cramped with four on deck.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/6-17-13a-077.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2190\" title=\"6-17-13a 077\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/6-17-13a-077.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/6-17-13a-077.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/6-17-13a-077-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/span><br \/>\nPandora, a bit more cushy perhaps. \u00a0However, I doubt that she would hold up for long with ten young cadets stomping around. \u00a0&#8220;Wait, watch out for the throw cushions. \u00a0Hey, don&#8217;t be so rough with the espresso maker&#8230;&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/6-6-13-0071.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2191\" title=\"6-6-13 007\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/6-6-13-0071.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/6-6-13-0071.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/6-6-13-0071-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nSo, how about the forward cabin accommodations. Oops, someone stuffed the sails up there. \u00a0Forgot, no roller furling. \u00a0Well, you do have to keep those cadets busy. \u00a0Besides there are ten of them on board. \u00a0Recall what Brenda says about folks on board <em>Pandora<\/em>. \u00a0&#8220;six for cocktails, four for dinner and two sleep over&#8221;. \u00a0Perhaps not the Navy way. \u00a0Hmm&#8230;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/6-17-13a-076.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2192\" title=\"6-17-13a 076\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/6-17-13a-076.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"752\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/6-17-13a-076.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/6-17-13a-076-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444; font-size: 14px;\">Me, at this point in my life I prefer the forward cabin on <em>Pandora<\/em>. \u00a0It seems more fun and even <em>Pandora&#8217;s<\/em> sheep mascots enjoy messing around up there.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/4-3-13b-014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2194\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/4-3-13b-014-e1371642353922.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"374\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">However, spending time aboard <em>Pandora<\/em> won&#8217;t breed the sorts of leaders that the 44s will, I would expect. \u00a0 Probably too much rum. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">You might say that by working hard, leaders might someday sail yachts, and those sailing on the Navy 44s become leaders who will someday have yachts. \u00a0With that in mind, the 44s are a good example of form following function. \u00a0That&#8217;s good.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was thrilled that the Naval Academy brought five of their 44s to Essex Yacht Club for the weekend. \u00a0It seems that they were on a training voyage, perhaps a &#8220;field trip&#8221;
