{"id":1660,"date":"2013-03-07T21:36:50","date_gmt":"2013-03-07T21:36:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=1660"},"modified":"2023-10-02T02:47:37","modified_gmt":"2023-10-02T07:47:37","slug":"deep-sea-fishing-in-rum-cay-and-some-beach-combing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=1660","title":{"rendered":"Deep sea fishing in Rum Cay and some beach combing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #444444;\">It\u2019s Thursday afternoon and the wind has died down from the front that came through last evening.\u00a0 Chris Parker, the weather router, says that he expects that this will be the last of the major fronts to come to this part of the Bahamas for this season. \u00a0That&#8217;s good so the winds should be more moderate going forward. \u00a0The strongest winds are in the early winter, just like up north but not nearly as cold and strong.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With some luck we will be on our way to Thompson Bay Long Island in a few days. \u00a0After that we will begin heading north to Cat Island and then Eleuthra prior to heading to the Abacos.\u00a0<span style=\"color: #444444;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While the winds last night strong, nearly 20kts, they are nothing like those north off of Cape Hatteras, where there are gales. \u00a0<span style=\"color: #444444;\">I understand that the constant wind will lessen as the season passes and that in the summer the winds in the Bahamas are in the 5-10kt range.\u00a0 Of course, that\u00a0doesn&#8217;t\u00a0take into account the hurricanes that blast through.\u00a0 Minor detail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A few days ago Brenda and I rented a golf cart to do some beach exploring along with our friends Dick and Anne.\u00a0 It was great fun and we enjoyed spending some time on the shore.\u00a0 The beach went on for miles and there\u00a0wasn&#8217;t\u00a0a sole to be seen.\u00a0 Good thing that the golf cart\u00a0didn&#8217;t\u00a0break down. Things\u00a0aren&#8217;t\u00a0maintained here at the same high level as in the states, it seems.\u00a0 As we were motoring down the road we approached a hill only to learn that the cart\u00a0doesn&#8217;t\u00a0seem to have breaks. \u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: #444444;\">That\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #444444;\">was a bit breathtaking, I\u2019d say.\u00a0 No loss of life though.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The beach was quite\u00a0magnificent\u00a0with large breakers hitting the shore.\u00a0 Pretty dramatic.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/3-6-13-015.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1662\" title=\"OLYMPUS \u00a0However, these two don&#8217;t look like they are leaving any time soon. \u00a0 I understand that the one upside down was flipped by Sandy and the other was owned by a drug guy years ago. \u00a0It seems that when stuff breaks down her it is just left and never picked up. \u00a0Too bad as it does junk up the island and much of it isn&#8217;t this interesting. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/3-6-13-024.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1674\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>Yesterday I spent some time spearfishing and bagged one small fish but not enough to make a meal out of.\u00a0 I should have spent more time with my camera as I spied a fabulous spotted ray that swam gracefully by and a small turtle.\u00a0 The water was really amazingly clear.\u00a0 I expect that the visibility was well in excess of 100\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444;\">These photos don\u2019t begin to do justice to the beauty of the reef.<\/span>There\u00a0wasn&#8217;t\u00a0\u00a0a massive number of fish but what was there was really beautiful.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/3-6-13iphone-012.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/3-7-13iphone-0461.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1676\" title=\"3-7-13iphone href=\"https:\/\/konacharterboat.com\/\">fishing<\/a> with one of the locals.\u00a0 Ben, who is the paid captain of this massive sports fish boat, watches it for a wealthy lawyer from the states who almost never uses the boat.\u00a0 Quite a vessel.\u00a0 Ben and I went out on his boat, the one on the left.\u00a0 I doubt that we could have afforded the fuel for the big one.\u00a0 Yikes.\u00a0 Actually, with fuel here on Rum Cay at $8 a gallon, I can\u2019t afford it here either.\u00a0 It has to be brought to the island in 50 gal drums, I am told.\u00a0 Not very efficient.\u00a0 \u00a0 Ben captains the boat on the right. \u00a0Alas, we fished on the one to the left. \u00a0I doubt that I could have even afforded the fuel to get the big one out of the marina. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/3-6-13iphone-0031.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1681\" title=\"3-6-13iphone sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #444444;\">We had a great day of fishing and bagged a Mahi Mahi, and a big King Mackerel. \u00a0The Mahi Mahi gave quite a fight including some spirited leaps into the air.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/3-6-13-045.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" seemed much more powerful than either one that we boated.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/3-6-13-044.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" used.\u00a0 I doubt that I have a knife aboard Pandora that could have tackled something as large as the King.<a the cleaning process.\u00a0 I\u2019d hate to land in the water and be mistaken for a piece of bait.\u00a0 Compared to these monsters, that\u2019s all I\u2019d be. \u00a0 The biggest run over 8&#8242; long.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/3-6-13-055.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1671\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>Last night we had sauteed Mahi Mahi for dinner and Mahi Mahi fish burgers for lunch today. \u00a0 Brenda did a great job on both. \u00a0 And, we have 4 huge King steaks in the freezer.\u00a0 Good thing as our freezer\u00a0isn&#8217;t\u00a0totally packed any longer. \u00a0 Tonight we will have grouper as I went spearfishing with a guy from the marina today and he speared two.<\/p>\n<p>A nice couple of days on Rum Cay. \u00a0Friday we will be exploring a few more beaches with that nifty golf cart.\u00a0 Let\u2019s hope that the hills\u00a0aren&#8217;t\u00a0too steep.<\/p>\n<p>Now that most of the boats have left the marina and the new crop of cruisers haven&#8217;t yet arrived, we have the place to ourselves. \u00a0 This
