Martinique Yole, not a flash in the pan."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are anchored in Grande Anse a lovely and large cove on the western side of Martinique.\u00a0 We expect to be here for a few days before heading over to St Anne, the southern most harbor in Martinique.<\/p>\n<p>The mile long sandy beach is lined with many beach bars to choose from.<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>There is a very nice promenade along the water behind the bars. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13110\" 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Of course, Pandora at anchor.\u00a0 Yes, you do have to look hard to see her in the center.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13111\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_4876.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>When we were near Fort de France, we were treated to a number of races by these amazing traditional sailing boats that I have learned are known as Yoles.\u00a0 These narrow, unballasted open boats are decedents of traditional fishing boats and are unique to Martinique.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/azmartinique.com\/en\/all-to-know\/did-you-know\/tour-of-the-yoles-rondes-of-martinique-history-of-a-unique-event\">This link gives an excellent overview<\/a> of the history of these fascinating craft.\u00a0 \u00a0These races are hotly contested and a major source of pride for the locals.<\/p>\n<p>The races begin with the boats all lined up on a beach.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13103\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/IMG_4737.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>And then they are off.\u00a0 When the gun goes off, everyone scrambles to get the boats going.\u00a0\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>I took this short video while waiting for a ferry to take us to Fort de France to go to Carnival for the day.<iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nc1hl9c3dgw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>These narrow boats are heavily canvased and with no ballast, they rely on crew hiking out on bamboo poles to steady them.\u00a0 \u00a0To watch these boats go by, and they are fast, is an impressive sight.\u00a0 Crew hike out on the bamboo poles to keep the boat from tipping over and sinking.\u00a0 \u00a0 In and out on the poles to balance the boat as the wind gusts or shifts. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Sailing these tippy boats is very athletic.\u00a0 I am told that this is THE sport of Martinique.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>There are a lot of close encounters.\u00a0 As the boats are so fast, they complete the races in less than 3o minutes.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" hard working crews make their way around the course.<\/p>\n<p>With the designation as a UNESCO world heritage fleet, and the enthusiasm of the racers and everyone in Martinique, the future of this class is surely secure.<\/p>\n<p>I guess I will close with a few photos that sort of captured a green flash last night, I think our third of the season here in the Caribbean.\u00a0 \u00a0What a
