{"id":12852,"date":"2023-01-07T15:58:10","date_gmt":"2023-01-07T20:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=12852"},"modified":"2023-01-07T15:58:10","modified_gmt":"2023-01-07T20:58:10","slug":"settling-into-life-aboard-pandora","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=12852","title":{"rendered":"Settling into life aboard Pandora."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Saturday afternoon and we have been aboard Pandora for a week since heading back to Antigua from the US.<\/p>\n<p>We are now anchored in our &#8220;normal spot&#8221; in Falmouth Harbor and are getting rain showers every few hours, night and day.\u00a0 It is mostly sunny and then the skies open up for perhaps ten minutes and then it&#8217;s sunny again.\u00a0 As they say &#8220;into every life a little rain must fall&#8221;.\u00a0 And, of course a rainbows follow.\u00a0 This one at dawn yesterday. <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12861\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3829.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3829.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3829-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>For the first few days we moved over to historic Nelson&#8217;s Dockyard and tied up to the quay.\u00a0 This involved Mediterranean mooring where we dropped our anchor out in the harbor and backed up to the marina wall, using the anchor to hold ourselves off and safe from hitting the dock.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a tricky process but after you get the hang of it, not too bad.\u00a0 \u00a0 When we moor this way, Brenda is up forward dropping the anchor.\u00a0 I power backwards, using the bow thruster to steer the boat.\u00a0 I say not too hard but my heart is racing the whole time as we always have to do this between a few other boats with feet on each side and of course there is always a nasty cross wind.\u00a0 \u00a0And, to add a bit of fun, this is a very popular spectator sport, as is all docking.\u00a0 Sometimes it feels more like Nascar with the excitement of crashes always a moment away.<\/p>\n<p>In spite of this, it&#8217;s very convenient to be able to step off of Pandora right onto the dock. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12854\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3803.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3803.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3803-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>We had some canvas repairs done while we have been in Antigua and that included a new mast boot, to keep the water out of the boat.\u00a0 Actually, this &#8220;fix&#8221; included an inner boot of rubber covered by the canvas.\u00a0 That part was done in Annapolis.<\/p>\n<p>The finished boot looks very sharp.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12856\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3805a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3805a.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3805a-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Even more impressive from the back as it&#8217;s pretty intricate with multiple Velcro flaps to keep it affixed. .\u00a0 It&#8217;s a bit hard to see but there is a lot going on including fittings for the boom vang and lots of other stuff to work around.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12857\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3806.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3806.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3806-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>This is what&#8217;s under the new canvas boot.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12863\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/PXL_20221008_131318623.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/PXL_20221008_131318623.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/PXL_20221008_131318623-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/PXL_20221008_131318623-600x800.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>This has been a major source of leaking down below, especially on this last passage so I hope that things are finally solved.\u00a0 Fingers crossed.<\/p>\n<p>Brenda&#8217;s also getting settled in and has met some new friends who knit.\u00a0 They meet twice a week at the Antigua Yacht Club for a few hours.\u00a0 A very nice group.\u00a0 The knitter on the right lives in Antigua year round having visited years ago and fell in love with the island. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12858\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3811.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3811.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3811-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>All that electrical upgrades we had done on Pandora over the summer are paying off with plenty of excess electricity to power the boat.\u00a0 Lots of hot water and I am thinking of having a change done on my electrical panel that will allow us to run our washing machine off of the batteries as well.\u00a0 We have a very powerful inverter to run appliances and it seems pretty clear that we can use a lot more power with the wind generator, new solar panels and those power hungry lithium batteries to suck all that juice up.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the solar array and wind generator.\u00a0 \u00a0This combo is a remarkable supply of power in the sunny and windy Caribbean.\u00a0 Of course, Falmouth Harbor in the background.\u00a0 Beyond the entrance, the island of Monserrate, home to one of the active volcanoes in the Caribbean. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12864\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3771.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3771.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3771-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Of course, it&#8217;s Saturday afternoon and it&#8217;s time for club racing.\u00a0 This lovely classic sloop tacked back and forth before heading out for the races.\u00a0 \u00a0What a contrast to all the huge mega yachts lined up cheek to jowl in the Antigua Yacht Club marina. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12862\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3839.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3839.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3839-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>And, speaking of clubs.\u00a0 I belong to plenty and enjoy flying the flags.\u00a0 \u00a0 Of course, the Antigua courtesy flag followed by the &#8220;white penant&#8221; of the Royal Naval Tot Club of Antigua and Barbuda.\u00a0 Of course, I am a card carrying member of this terrific group.\u00a0 Below that, a big Salty Dawg rally flag.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12859\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3817.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"890\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3817.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3817-236x300.jpg 236w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3817-629x800.jpg 629w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>And speaking of the White Pennant.\u00a0 This beautiful classic yacht, Shemara, built in 1938, pulled in today flying a White Ensign, which is very similar to the Tot Club flag.\u00a0 This version signifies that someone aboard is a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron.\u00a0 I have seen this yacht before and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=12188\">wrote about her in this post<\/a>.\u00a0 With one million man hours in the restoration, she deserves to be beautiful.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12866\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3855.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" \/><span style=\"color: #444444;\">On the port side&#8230;\u00a0 The Salty Dawg battle flag and club burgee, the &#8220;flying fish&#8221; of the Ocean Cruising Club and finally, the Seven Seas Cruising Association Commodore Burgee.\u00a0 \u00a0Brenda and I earned that one for living aboard for 12 out of 18 months a number of years ago and also sailing at least 1,000 miles in that\u00a0 season as well.<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12860\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3818.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"1050\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3818.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3818-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3818-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_3818-533x800.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>Beyond that, not a lot to talk about.\u00a0 Brenda&#8217;s birthday is coming up on the 15th and she&#8217;s none too happy about being away from family so I will have to work hard to make it up to her.<\/p>\n<p>I guess that&#8217;s one part of living aboard that she will never settle into.\u00a0 Other than that,\u00a0 we are settling pretty well into life aboard Pandora, here in Antigua.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Saturday afternoon and we have been aboard Pandora for a week since heading back to Antigua from the US.
