{"id":12706,"date":"2022-10-16T08:09:09","date_gmt":"2022-10-16T13:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=12706"},"modified":"2022-10-16T08:09:09","modified_gmt":"2022-10-16T13:09:09","slug":"my-boat-is-calling-and-i-must-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=12706","title":{"rendered":"My boat is calling and I must go."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In less than a week Pandora will go back in the water to head to Hampton and the Salty Dawg Rally to Antigua.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll admit that I am pretty excited about hanging out with what will be a capacity crowd including nearly 125 boats heading for points south.<\/p>\n<p>Pandora is currently on the hard in Annapolis with a number of techs swarming over her dealing with paint issues, electrical and rigging details that need addressing.<\/p>\n<p>Last weekend I headed down there for about 4 days to work on the many things that needed doing before she goes back in the water.\u00a0 I am hoping that her splash date will be Monday October 24th but if weather is not looking good for the run to Hampton, I&#8217;ll have to stick with an earlier date.<\/p>\n<p>One of the issues that I had to address was the instillation of the replacement for my corroded aluminum tank that sprung a leak last winter, dumping all 35 gallons of precious fuel into the bilge. I was able to save about 10 gallons but the rest went away.\u00a0 \u00a0 I had the new tank constructed at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lutherswelding.com\/\">Luther&#8217;s Welding<\/a> in RI.\u00a0 \u00a0I have to say that they do really great work.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up the new tank at their shop.\u00a0 The new one looks a lot better, that&#8217;s for sure.\u00a0<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12700\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221003_141833000.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221003_141833000.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221003_141833000-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221003_141833000-600x800.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>I have now learned a lot about corrosion and what can happen when aluminum lays in the bilge.\u00a0 In such a dank area salt sitting on the metal will raise hell with it over time.\u00a0 The &#8220;new&#8221; leak was pretty apparent.\u00a0 \u00a0No wonder that it didn&#8217;t take long for all that fuel to leak out.\u00a0 Nasty&#8230; <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12701\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221003_141850511.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221003_141850511.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221003_141850511-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><span style=\"color: #444444;\">The replacement tank was constructed to be about 1\/8&#8243; smaller, in each direction, than the old one, just to be sure that it would fit, and it does.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In order to avoid another failure down the road, it was recommended that I support the new tank with some 2&#8243; square plastic spacers bedded with 3M 5200 to keep the tank from being in direct contact with the hull and any salt that might accumulate under it.\u00a0 \u00a0Sadly, I neglected to purchase &#8220;fast cure&#8221; so the glue stayed wet and the spacers slipped and slid all over the place while I tried to put the tank in place.\u00a0 After a few false starts, I was able to secure it and get the floor joists installed as well. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12709\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221009_180847394.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221009_180847394.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221009_180847394-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221009_180847394-600x800.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>I was also having difficulty with the boom gooseneck that was working the fittings loose and needed some love.\u00a0 It is generally a bad thing if the boom works itself loose while underway.\u00a0 They removed the boom, did some surgery, and now it&#8217;s back in place.\u00a0 It was a pretty big job in spite of there being only a few new screws showing for their efforts.\u00a0 Better now. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12708\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221008_131329011.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221008_131329011.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221008_131329011-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221008_131329011-600x800.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>I also had small but persistent leak around the deck joint for the mast.\u00a0 I had no idea how they would address it but they did.\u00a0 It looks pretty elegant.\u00a0 So much, I hope for the SLOB, Slow Leak Over Bunk.\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12707\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221008_131318623.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221008_131318623.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221008_131318623-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221008_131318623-600x800.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>And under the &#8220;so simple, even a child, or Bob, can do it&#8221;, I installed two new faucets in the heads.\u00a0 The old ones were pretty corroded.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t expect that these will last decades but then, nothing does in the marine environment.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12710\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221010_161516416.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221010_161516416.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221010_161516416-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PXL_20221010_161516416-600x800.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>I am also having the underside of the hard dodger repainted as the old finish was peeling and looked terrible.\u00a0 It&#8217;s turning out to be a very difficult job with some adhesion issues that have come up and I am anxious about what the bill will be like and how it will turn out.<\/p>\n<p>For that matter I am DOUBLY ANXIOUS about how big the bill will be overall.\u00a0 It was certainly a good plan on my part to also focus on the kitchen and guest bath so I can say to Brenda, &#8220;well, we spent a LOT on BOTH the house and boat.&#8221; I cling to the belief that this gives approach will give me at least a bit of cover.\u00a0 Probably not, but I am sticking to my story.<\/p>\n<p>Oh yeah, remember that nasty cold that I caught from my adorable little granddaughter?\u00a0 It turns out that when I headed to Annapolis for four days of work on Pandora, well I had bronchial pneumonia.\u00a0 \u00a0 Fortunately, I was on a heavy duty antibiotic which helped, well helped a little as I hacked my way through three days of work on Pandora.<\/p>\n<p>I can tell you that sanding the bottom of Pandora, all 47&#8242;
