{"id":114,"date":"2011-07-31T13:56:00","date_gmt":"2011-07-31T13:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=114"},"modified":"2023-10-19T23:12:58","modified_gmt":"2023-10-20T04:12:58","slug":"camden-to-bucks-harbor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=114","title":{"rendered":">Camden to Buck&#8217;s Harbor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&gt;I write this we are anchored off of Devil&#8217;s Island in Merchant Row near Stonington. \u00a0 On Friday afternoon we had a rousing sail ahead of a stiff southerly over to Buck&#8217;s Harbor at the head of Eggemogin Reach. \u00a0 The weather was fairly snotty but the wind was from the right direction for a down wind sail so off we went. \u00a0The forecast was for rain overnight, which did not\u00a0disappoint, as a front came through on Friday night. \u00a0After an overcast start to the day the winds shifted to the north and the sun came out giving us a nice run down Eggemogin Reach and into Merchant Row under blue skys.<\/p>\n<p>As I paid my bill at the Camden Yacht Club, one of the launch drivers said that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Velsheda_(yacht)\">Velsheda<\/a> had come in the night before and dropped anchor off of the harbor. \u00a0Velsheda is one of the grand classic J class of racing boats from the 30s, the largest class to ever compete for the America&#8217;s Cup. \u00a0Velsheda was purchased in the 90s as a bare hull, \u00a0was meticulously rebuilt and launched in the late 90s. \u00a0She is owned by a European business man and splits her time between Europe, the\u00a0Caribbean\u00a0and, \u00a0it would seem, \u00a0here in New England. \u00a0 \u00a0 The J class was never a class with many boats and as the largest yachts to compete for the America&#8217;s cup, actually raced during the depression. \u00a0I guess there were some financial winners, even in those difficult times. \u00a0In recent years untold sums have been spent by caring owners to rebuild these yachts to their former glory. \u00a0A few have also been built to plans drawn in the early days but never actually constructed. \u00a0The class has an active racing circuit and recently came together for a series in Newport. \u00a0There are actually more boats of this class sailing today than was the case in the 30s. \u00a0Check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jclassyachts.com\/index.html\">class association site<\/a> as it has great info on all of the yachts out there including some info on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jclassyachts.com\/velsheda\/index.html\">Velsheda<\/a>\u00a0who has as one distinction\u00a0among many, boasting the largest single piece carbon fiber mast in the world. \u00a0With 11 yachts total in the class, this has to be one of the most exclusive associations there is as you have to own one of these mega yachts to join.<\/p>\n<p>We went by her on our way out of Camden harbor but she passed too close to get good photos. \u00a0 Yachts like these really make you wonder how someone amasses the money to own one.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-pHLGeXJc2pM\/TjVGpMQaZVI\/AAAAAAAABMI\/kZ0bAI-r6_E\/s1600\/7-31-11+camden+bucks+harbor+011.JPG\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-pHLGeXJc2pM\/TjVGpMQaZVI\/AAAAAAAABMI\/kZ0bAI-r6_E\/s400\/7-31-11+camden+bucks+harbor+011.JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<p>It was rough outside the harbor and even she was rolling as she headed in to calmer waters.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-h5nml8fTCYk\/TjVHIy1p1lI\/AAAAAAAABMM\/Z5YcWNY_UtE\/s1600\/7-31-11+camden+bucks+harbor+014.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-h5nml8fTCYk\/TjVHIy1p1lI\/AAAAAAAABMM\/Z5YcWNY_UtE\/s400\/7-31-11+camden+bucks+harbor+014.JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Speaking of having money. \u00a0It would seem that this yacht was the &#8220;mother ship&#8221; for Velsheda who came in and anchored while I was on top of Mt Battie the prior evening. \u00a0I could tell that she was related as she flew the J class flag from her mast head. \u00a0This yacht is a real classic. \u00a0With a major yacht like ByStander, a J class yacht and who knows what else, I can only imagine what his home is like. \u00a0Probably more than one home at that.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-v3njKSW03s8\/TjVGLA6ovTI\/AAAAAAAABME\/Sk1kAS8IQbU\/s1600\/7-31-11+camden+bucks+harbor+002.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-v3njKSW03s8\/TjVGLA6ovTI\/AAAAAAAABME\/Sk1kAS8IQbU\/s320\/7-31-11+camden+bucks+harbor+002.JPG\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The yacht is named Bystander and was recently launched for her owner. \u00a0This link to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.charterworld.com\/index.html?sub=yacht-charter&amp;charter=bystander-2298\">yacht charter site<\/a> talks a bit about her details and notes that she is a support vessel for her owner&#8217;s J class boat. \u00a0Amazing display of wealth, however, with a sense of style. \u00a0This is a link to an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bymnews.com\/may\/ronald-de-waal.html\">interesting article <\/a>about Bystander and Velsheda.<\/p>\n<p>Well, back to more pedestrian thoughts and our visit to Buck&#8217;s harbor. \u00a0The course from Camden to Bucks winds among some beautiful islands in upper Penobscot Bay as this chart shows.<br \/>\n<span id=\"goog_1145445954\"><\/span><span id=\"goog_1145445955\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-fJRY1CIlWfg\/TjVT7pXm9vI\/AAAAAAAABMs\/giz03NrsWwg\/s1600\/camden+bucks0001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-fJRY1CIlWfg\/TjVT7pXm9vI\/AAAAAAAABMs\/giz03NrsWwg\/s400\/camden+bucks0001.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"308\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Along the way we passed many islands and one was packed with seals. \u00a0There must have been 50 of them on the rocks. \u00a0It&#8217;s hard to see but the light spots on the rocks are all seals.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-_A37BPmdYao\/TjVarKWjXlI\/AAAAAAAABNA\/ZsM-5Wc6Jto\/s1600\/7-31-11+camden+bucks+harbor+016.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-_A37BPmdYao\/TjVarKWjXlI\/AAAAAAAABNA\/ZsM-5Wc6Jto\/s320\/7-31-11+camden+bucks+harbor+016.JPG\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">On Saturday morning we headed to Bucks Harbor Marina to take the short walk to the general store. \u00a0It took lot longer that we expected as there was a bit of drama unfolding at the dock. \u00a0A small lobster yacht was sitting at the dock with massive amounts of steam billowing up from down below. \u00a0It seems that they had suffered a loss of coolant and then began taking on water. \u00a0As it rose in the bilge it hit a very hot engine that turned everything to steam. \u00a0 The crew and some of the local marina folks were bailing like mad and yet the boat was getting lower and lower in the water \u00a0After realizing that they were fighting a loosing battle they moved her over to the shore and beached her on the falling tide. \u00a0Fortunately, the tide was high at about the time this all began so the water was\u00a0receding\u00a0once they were beached. \u00a0However by this time there was a foot of water in the cockpit and it was looking a bit grim. \u00a0 Fortunately, in a powerboat like this one the engine is set fairly high in the hull so a good part of the engine was still clear of the water. \u00a0I had to wonder why they didn&#8217;t just close all of the through hull fittings but it seems that the place where the water was coming in wasn&#8217;t accessible. \u00a0Not good.<\/div>\n<p>As this photo shows, they were really working hard to keep the boat afloat. \u00a0They say that the best bilge pump is a terrified crew member with a buck. \u00a0That would apply here. \u00a0Clearly motivated.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-8JRTcrRmVJk\/TjVV3-yihHI\/AAAAAAAABM4\/qBebZZskOrM\/s1600\/7-31-11+camden+bucks+harbor+065.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-8JRTcrRmVJk\/TjVV3-yihHI\/AAAAAAAABM4\/qBebZZskOrM\/s400\/7-31-11+camden+bucks+harbor+065.JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>This is every boat owners greatest nightmare, having your boat sink from under you. \u00a0Good thing that they weren&#8217;t far from shore. \u00a0When we finally left the tide was headed out and they were\u00a0assessing\u00a0the damage.
