{"id":111,"date":"2011-07-25T11:26:00","date_gmt":"2011-07-25T11:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=111"},"modified":"2011-07-25T11:26:00","modified_gmt":"2011-07-25T11:26:00","slug":"port-clyde-hog-island-and-to-rockland-for-a-new-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sailpandora.com\/?p=111","title":{"rendered":">Port Clyde, Hog Island and to Rockland for a new week."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>>After a few days of sailing where we explored Muscongus Bay, Pandora is now in Rockland. &nbsp;While it&#8217;s not the most scenic place to be, there are lots of places to go in town and there is a large grocery a short way out of town. &nbsp;As our car is here, that does make it appealing as Brenda can catch up on errands without having to walk and lug. &nbsp; &nbsp;I guess that most any place looks great just after sun-up. &nbsp;How peaceful.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-pShg8bdRqvo\/Ti1N8E5GdvI\/AAAAAAAABLA\/-RJtR-7kgnU\/s1600\/7-25-11+Hog+Rockland+096.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-pShg8bdRqvo\/Ti1N8E5GdvI\/AAAAAAAABLA\/-RJtR-7kgnU\/s400\/7-25-11+Hog+Rockland+096.JPG\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>As we left Allen Island, home of the Wyeth&#8217;s on Saturday we headed into Port Clyde with our friends Miles and Laureen and enjoyed lunch on the dock at the general store. &nbsp;The store, with wide pine boards on the floor, a lunch counter and deck with picnic tables, looks like it&#8217;s right out of the 40s. &nbsp;Port Clyde is primarily a fishing village and is loaded with lobster boats. We stopped and &#8220;borrowed&#8221; a mooring for a few hours while we headed ashore. <\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Isn&#8217;t this a quaint place? &nbsp;It&#8217;s very Maine.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-87sLM3A8mJk\/Ti1NCUiuqMI\/AAAAAAAABKU\/E0-gEJjZ0ok\/s1600\/7-25-11+Hog+Rockland+026.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-87sLM3A8mJk\/Ti1NCUiuqMI\/AAAAAAAABKU\/E0-gEJjZ0ok\/s400\/7-25-11+Hog+Rockland+026.JPG\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Along the way we spotted the mail boat, that gives tours of the area. &nbsp;It&#8217;s very pretty and is a boat that I would love to go out on at some point. &nbsp;Run by the <a href=\"http:\/\/monheganboat.com\/\">Monhegan Boat Company<\/a>, this seems to me like the way to go out to Monhegan for the day. &nbsp;Their <a href=\"http:\/\/monheganboat.com\/our-boats\/\">Laura B <\/a>is a real classic. &nbsp;Built by the Navy in 1943, she saw action carrying supplies and troops in the South Pacific and has been in Maine since 1946. &nbsp; I shot this photo as she steamed by on one of her trips. &nbsp;She is in great shape and clearly has a caring owner.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-aLnaNrlFl7g\/Ti1M9sDJmTI\/AAAAAAAABKQ\/-5t-Bxa7sYs\/s1600\/7-25-11+Hog+Rockland+020.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-aLnaNrlFl7g\/Ti1M9sDJmTI\/AAAAAAAABKQ\/-5t-Bxa7sYs\/s400\/7-25-11+Hog+Rockland+020.JPG\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The boat also does an evening lighthouse tour that goes to some of the very scenic lights in the area. &nbsp; This one marks the entrance to Port Clyde. It&#8217;s now automated and is part of a private home.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-STSu7tSthD4\/Ti1NI17JkZI\/AAAAAAAABKY\/cFv7JRx39ZM\/s1600\/7-25-11+Hog+Rockland+032.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-STSu7tSthD4\/Ti1NI17JkZI\/AAAAAAAABKY\/cFv7JRx39ZM\/s400\/7-25-11+Hog+Rockland+032.JPG\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Brenda and I hope to spend a day on Monhegan Island via Laura B in the next few weeks. &nbsp; There aren&#8217;t many opportunities to so on a classic like this so I don&#8217;t want to miss it.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch we headed up to Hog Island, about 15 miles from Port Clyde. &nbsp;For a day sail, Muscongus Bay is a real treat, if a bit of a challenge from a navigation standpoint. With lots of unmarked ledges, you have to really watch the charts. &nbsp;The winds were fabulous and barreling between ledges and small islands at 7+kts was a bit of a nail biter. &nbsp; &nbsp;This gives a good feel for all of the &#8220;hard stuff&#8221; that we passed. &nbsp;Quite scenic.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-LB0BhysQDVQ\/Ti1P_M1Ig_I\/AAAAAAAABLE\/CGrLFut1ICc\/s1600\/port+clyde+hog0001.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; it.<\/p>\n<p>After a brief visit at Hog Island, now a summer camp for boys it would seem, we headed, with a nice breeze for a while, over to Rockland. &nbsp; Oh, I guess that I should put in a photo of some flowers from Hog. &nbsp;Nice butterfly. <\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; What a sight seeing them sail by with their big mainsails way out. &nbsp;A very elegant sight.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-GFBLiBE_PUY\/Ti1Nm4MNuXI\/AAAAAAAABKw\/NRpBfAPer5g\/s1600\/7-25-11+Hog+Rockland+077.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em;
